Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva Fundamental Vow Sutra (地藏菩薩本願經)

Chapter 2: The Gathering of Manifested Forms

At that time, from hundreds of thousands of millions of inconceivable, immeasurable, and indescribable worlds, countless as the sands of the Ganges, all the manifestations of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva from every hell realm gathered together in the Trayastrimsa Heaven. By the power of the Tathagata, each from their own direction, together with beings who had attained liberation and emerged from the paths of karma—each group also numbering in the hundreds of thousands of millions—all brought incense and flowers to make offerings to the Buddha.

All those who came together had been guided by the teachings of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and had attained irreversible progress toward Supreme Enlightenment. For countless eons, these beings had wandered through the cycle of birth and death, suffering in the six realms without respite. Through the vast compassion and profound vows of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, each had attained the fruit of realization.

Having arrived at the Trayastrimsa Heaven, their hearts filled with joy, they gazed upon the Tathagata without turning their eyes away for even a moment.

At that time, the World-Honored One extended his golden arm and laid his hand upon the heads of the countless, immeasurable, and inconceivable billions of billions of transformation bodies of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Ksitigarbha from all worlds. He spoke these words:

"In this world of five impurities and evil, I have taught and guided such stubborn beings, taming their minds, leading them to abandon wrong views and return to the right path. Yet, ten or twenty percent still cling to their evil habits. I, too, have manifested countless transformation bodies, employing all manner of skillful means. Some, with sharp faculties, hear and immediately accept the teaching. Some, through good roots, are diligently urged to achieve liberation. Some, dull and slow to understand, are guided over a long time before they turn back. Some, burdened by heavy karma, do not give rise to reverence. Beings of these various kinds, each with their differences, I have liberated through my transformation bodies.

Sometimes I appear as a man, sometimes as a woman, sometimes as a heavenly being or a dragon, sometimes as a spirit or a ghost. Sometimes I manifest as mountains, forests, plains, rivers, ponds, springs, or wells, bringing benefit to people, liberating them all. Sometimes I appear as a heavenly emperor, as a Brahma king, as a wheel-turning sage king, as a layperson, as a king, as a minister of state, as an official, as a monk, a nun, a layman, a laywoman, or even as a voice-hearer, an arhat, a pratyekabuddha, or a bodhisattva—using these forms to teach and liberate. It is not only the form of a Buddha that appears before them.

Behold, through countless eons of diligent toil, I have liberated such difficult, stubborn, and sin-laden beings. Those who remain untamed will follow their karma and receive their due retribution. Should they fall into the evil realms and endure great suffering, you must remember my earnest entrustment here in the Trayastrimsa Heaven. Ensure that all beings in this Saha World, from now until the coming of Maitreya, attain liberation, forever leave all sufferings behind, and encounter a Buddha to receive a prediction of their future Buddhahood."

At that time, all the manifested bodies of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva from countless worlds merged back into one form. With tears of compassion and deep devotion, he addressed the Buddha, saying:

"Since the distant past, over countless eons, I have been guided and supported by the Buddhas. Through their grace, I have attained inconceivable spiritual power and profound wisdom. My manifested bodies fill worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. In each world, I manifest hundreds of thousands of millions of bodies. Through each body, I guide hundreds of thousands of millions of beings, leading them to take refuge in the Three Jewels, to permanently escape the cycle of birth and death, and to attain the bliss of Nirvana.

Even the smallest good deed performed within the Dharma—be it as tiny as a hair, a drop of water, a grain of sand, a speck of dust, or the slightest effort—I will gradually guide those beings to liberation, enabling them to attain great benefit. I only ask, O World-Honored One, that you have no concern for the beings of future ages who create evil karma."

Three times he repeated this plea to the Buddha: "I only ask, O World-Honored One, that you have no concern for the beings of future ages who create evil karma."

At that time, the Buddha praised the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, saying: "Excellent! Excellent! I rejoice in your merit. You have fulfilled the great vows you made over countless eons, and having nearly completed the vast work of liberating beings, you are on the verge of attaining Enlightenment."
