Translated by the Indian Tripitaka Master Guṇabhadra of the Song Dynasty
Thus have I heard:
Once, the Blessed One was dwelling on Mount Vulture Peak in Rajagriha, together with a community of two hundred and fifty great monks. At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks, "You should contemplate the Tathagata through these eleven thoughts. Having contemplated, you should cultivate loving-kindness toward the Tathagata. What are these eleven?
"1. The mind of discipline is pure. 2. Conduct and demeanor are complete. 3. The senses are not confused. 4. Trust is unwavering. 5. There is always a courageous and vigorous mind. 6. Neither pleasure nor pain causes worry. 7. Mindfulness is not lost. 8. Calm and insight are present. 9. The mind in deep meditation never rests. 10. Wisdom is immeasurable. 11. Seeing the Buddha without ever being satisfied.
"Monks, with these eleven thoughts, you should contemplate the Tathagata. Having contemplated the Tathagata, you should cultivate loving-kindness toward him. This is what is meant by a monk practicing mindfulness of the Buddha. That monk who has practiced mindfulness of the Buddha will, from the two fruits, seek one fruit—either attaining freedom in this very life or realizing the state of the non-returner (Anagami)."
