The Great Master, the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, delivered the Dharma at the Dafan Temple in Shaozhou, in what is known as the Platform Sutra, also called the *Platform Sutra* or the *Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch*, compiled by his disciple Fahai. It is an important scripture of the Chan school. This sutra was composed during the Tang Dynasty, recording the sudden teaching Dharma gate expounded by the Great Master Huineng at Dafan Temple in Shaozhou. Its core teaching is "directly pointing to the human mind, seeing one's nature and becoming a Buddha," emphasizing the practice of realizing the original purity of self-nature and attaining Buddhahood through sudden awakening. Its contents encompass Prajñā Wisdom, the formless precepts, Meditation (Dhyāna), and liberation. It is the fundamental text of the Southern School of Chan. As the only work by a patriarch in the history of Chinese Buddhism honored with the title "sutra," its status is lofty. It has profoundly influenced the Chan school and East Asian Buddhism as a whole, and remains an essential text for the study of Chan thought to this day.

The Sixth Patriarch's Platform Sutra of the Supreme Mahayana Sudden Teaching of the Southern School

兼授無相戒弘法弟子法海集記

Collected and recorded by Fahai, disciple of the Dharma Master who teaches the Formless Precept

Master Huineng ascended the high seat in the Great Fan Temple lecture hall and taught the Dharma of Mahāprajñāpāramitā, conferring the formless precepts. At that time, over ten thousand people were in the assembly—monks, nuns, laypeople, and householders—along with Prefect Wei Qu of Shaozhou and more than thirty officials, as well as over thirty Confucian scholars. They all requested the Master to teach the Dharma of Mahāprajñāpāramitā. The Prefect then instructed the Master's disciple, the monk Fahai, to compile and record this teaching, so it might be passed down to later generations. This would allow those who seek the Way to inherit this core teaching, transmit it to one another, and have a reliable guide to uphold. The result of this is the *Platform Sūtra*.
