Dharma gates are boundless, I vow to learn them all. The unsurpassed Buddha way is supreme, I vow to realize it fully. Recite three times. Good and wise teachers! When we say 'sentient beings are countless, I vow to liberate them all,' it is not Huineng who liberates them. Rather, the sentient beings in the minds of each good and wise teacher must be liberated by their own true nature. What does it mean to liberate oneself through one's own true nature? Within this physical body, when wrong views, afflictions, ignorance, and delusion arise, there is still the innate awakened nature that uses Right View to liberate them. Once you awaken to the wisdom of Right View—the insight of prajna—you can cast aside ignorance and delusion. Each sentient being liberates themselves: when wrongness arises, Right View liberates; when delusion arises, awakening liberates; when ignorance arises, wisdom liberates; when evil arises, goodness liberates; when affliction arises, enlightenment liberates. This kind of liberation is what is truly meant by liberation. 'Afflictions are endless, I vow to cut through them all'—this means clearing away false thoughts from your own mind. 'Dharma gates are boundless, I vow to learn them all'—this means studying the unsurpassed true Dharma. 'The unsurpassed Buddha way is supreme, I vow to realize it fully'—this means always practicing with humility, respecting all beings, moving away from confusion and attachment, letting awakened wisdom give rise to prajna, and once delusion is cleared away, you awaken naturally to the Buddha way. This is the power of carrying out your vows."
