Chapter 11: No-Thought
The Buddha said to the bodhisattva Bhadrapala: "If a bodhisattva wishes to learn this samadhi and quickly attain it, they should first cut off thoughts of form and abandon their own arrogance. Once they have cut off such thoughts and are no longer arrogant, they should go on to learn this samadhi without arguing. What does it mean to argue? It means slandering Emptiness. Therefore, one should not argue with others, should not slander Emptiness, and then recite this samadhi."
The Buddha said to Bhadrapala: "If a bodhisattva studies and recites this samadhi, there are ten things in which they should establish themselves. What are the ten? First, when others give them bowls, robes, or clothing, they should not be envious. Second, they should love and respect everyone, and be filial and obedient to their elders. Third, they should be grateful and remember to repay kindness. Fourth, they should not speak falsely and should stay far from what is unwholesome. Fifth, they should always practice the begging round and not accept invitations. Sixth, they should be diligent in walking meditation. Seventh, they should not lie down day or night. Eighth, they should always wish to give generously, to beings in heaven and on earth, holding nothing back and never regretting it. Ninth, they should go deep into wisdom without clinging to anything. Tenth, they should first honor and serve a good teacher, seeing them as a Buddha. Only then should they recite this samadhi. These are the ten things."
"Those who practice in accordance with the Dharma in this way will attain eight things. What are these eight?
First, complete purity of the precepts, reaching the highest perfection. Second, not engaging in other paths, entering into wisdom. Third, being pure in wisdom, no longer giving rise to greed. Fourth, having pure vision, no longer desiring birth and death. Fifth, being lofty and luminous, clinging to nothing. Sixth, being pure in diligence, attaining Buddhahood through one's own effort. Seventh, not becoming joyful merely because someone makes offerings. Eighth, firmly established on the path to supreme enlightenment, never again wavering.
These are the eight things."
At that time, the Buddha spoke these verses:
