The Ritual Manual of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, translated by the eminent Tang dynasty monk Śubhakarasiṃha (Shanwuwe), is one of the important scriptures of Esoteric Buddhism. This ritual manual elaborates in detail the practice methods, mantras, and offering ceremonies related to Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva. Its contents encompass esoteric practices such as praises, mantra recitation, and visualization, aiming to assist practitioners in accumulating merit and eliminating karmic obstacles. During the flourishing period of Esoteric Buddhism in the Tang dynasty, Śubhakarasiṃha, as one of the Three Great Masters of the Kaiyuan era, translated this ritual manual from Sanskrit into Chinese, promoting the spread of Kṣitigarbha devotion in the Han region. Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva is renowned for his great vows and is regarded as the primary bodhisattva for delivering beings in the netherworld. This ritual manual holds a significant position within Buddhist esoteric practice and remains one of the core scriptures for cultivating the Kṣitigarbha Dharma method to this day.

Translated by Śubhakarasiṃha of Central India by Imperial Decree

At that time, Shakyamuni Buddha was on Mount Malaya, accompanied by countless Bodhisattvas of the Earth Store, ten koṭis of bhikṣus and bhikṣuṇīs, as well as the eight kinds of gods, dragons, and spirits. Surrounded by an immeasurable multitude of hundreds of thousands, he was expounding the Dharma.

Then, among the great assembly, a great being named Earth Store, with his right shoulder bared and his right knee on the ground, joined his palms respectfully and addressed the Buddha, saying, “I wish to recite a divine mantra for the benefit of all beings. I beseech the World-Honored One to compassionately grant me permission to speak this divine mantra.”

The Buddha then said to Earth Store Bodhisattva, “Speak quickly, for the benefit of all sentient beings.”

At that moment, the Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha rose into the air, praised the World-Honored One, and bowed in reverence. In the sky, he also displayed immeasurable supernatural powers, and with his divine voice, he spoke the mantra:

Next, the Heart Mantra is explained:

The second heart-mantra:

As soon as this mantra was spoken, even great Bodhisattvas of the Tenth Stage lost their ordinary awareness and became bewildered. Celestial dragons, the eight classes of beings, yakshas, and spirits fled in panic, falling to the ground. The sun, moon, and stars lost their light and hid themselves. From the sky, precious flowers rained down in profusion. Even if spoken for countless eons, the power of this mantra could never be fully described.

Next, the method for painting the image. For the image of a Śrāvaka, he wears a monastic robe that properly covers the left shoulder. In his left hand, he holds a vessel in the shape of a full flower; his right hand displays the gesture of fearlessness. He is seated on a lotus flower.

For the image of the Great Being, he wears a celestial crown on his head and is clad in a monastic robe. In his left hand, he holds a lotus flower; his right hand is as described earlier. He is seated peacefully on a nine-grade lotus throne(Tradition states: "Nine grades" means nine layers; it is also said to be the central platform within eight petals.).

Next, explain the hand gesture and mantra seal. Bring both hands together in the "three-fingered" gesture, with the palms facing inward and moving back and forth. The mantra is as follows:

Next, the Universal Offering Mudra is explained. With both hands in the gesture of three-part offering, the thumb and index finger move back and forth.

First, the general explanation of the overall seal. The two hands form the *samputa* mudra, with the index fingers moving forward and back. The mantra is as follows:

Next, the Seal of Praise. With both hands in the "three-puṭa" gesture, the strength moves forward and back. Then, the sending off: with the meditative hand, advance and flick.
