This is what I heard:
At one time, the World-Honored One journeyed to the city of Mali, where he gathered with the assembly of bhikkhus. In that city, there was a devout lay disciple also named Mali, who had newly built a house in the city. It was beautifully adorned, pure, and spacious—a dwelling where no ascetics or brahmins had ever stayed before.
When Mali the lay disciple heard that the Buddha, the World-Honored One, had arrived in the city with the assembly of bhikkhus, his heart was filled with joy. He went to where the Buddha was, bowed his head at the feet of the World-Honored One, and after paying his respects, he joined his palms together, stepped back, and stood to one side.
He addressed the Buddha, saying, "World-Honored One, I am a lay disciple named Mali, and I hold deep faith in you. In this city, I have newly built a house that is pure and spacious—a dwelling where no ascetics or brahmins have ever stayed before. I now invite you, the Buddha, and the assembly of bhikkhus to stay in my house. I pray that you, World-Honored One, out of compassion for me, will accept my invitation."
