The Sutra on the Origin of Human Desires

Translation by An Shigao, Tripitaka Master from Parthia, Later Han Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the land of Kuru, residing at a place where the law of Kuru was upheld. At that time, the Venerable Ananda, alone in quiet contemplation, had this thought arise in his mind: "Truly remarkable is this—the mind is the subtle origin, and within the subtlety of birth and death lies an even deeper subtlety, yet it is clearly and easily revealed."

Then, when the night had passed, Venerable Ananda rose and went to the Buddha. Having arrived, he paid homage at the Buddha's feet and sat to one side. Once seated, Venerable Ananda addressed the Buddha, saying: "Just now, while alone in quiet contemplation, this thought arose in my mind: 'Truly remarkable is this—the mind is the subtle origin, and within the subtlety of birth and death lies an even deeper subtlety, yet it is clearly and easily revealed.'"

The Buddha said to Ananda, "Do not say this is clear and easy to know, easy to see—it is deep and subtle. Ananda, from a root, existence and rebirth arise. Ananda, from a fundamental cause, existence and rebirth come to be. If one does not know, does not see, does not understand, does not accept this, then this world is like a woven shuttle on a loom, going back and forth—from this world to the next, from the next world to this one—dwelling in the suffering of the world, unable to leave it. Thus, Ananda, this cause is deep and subtle. From a root, existence and rebirth are also subtle and profound.

If someone asks, 'Is there a cause for old age and death?' When asked this, reply, 'There is a cause.' 'What is the cause, Ananda, for old age and death?' Reply, 'Birth is the cause.' If someone asks, 'Is there a cause for birth?' When asked this, reply, 'There is a cause.' 'What is the cause for birth?' 'Existence is the cause for birth.' If someone asks, 'Is there a cause for existence?' Reply, 'There is a cause for existence.' 'What is the cause for existence?' Reply, 'Clinging is the cause for existence.' If someone asks, 'Is there a cause for clinging?' Reply, 'There is a cause for clinging.' 'What is the cause for clinging?' Reply, 'Craving is the cause for clinging.'

Thus, Ananda, from craving comes clinging, from clinging comes existence, from existence comes birth, from birth come old age, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and despair. Thus arises the complete mass of suffering. From this chain, Ananda, birth is the cause for old age and death. Therefore it is said: from this, that arises. Thus, Ananda, understand clearly: birth is the cause for old age and death.

If, Ananda, there were no birth, there would be no fish or kinds of fish, no birds or kinds of birds, no mosquitoes or kinds of mosquitoes, no dragons or kinds of dragons, no spirits or kinds of spirits, no ghosts or kinds of ghosts, no humans or kinds of humans. Whatever kinds there are, if there is no birth, then there would be nothing to give rise to birth. If, Ananda, there were no birth at all, would there be old age and death?"

Ananda said to the Buddha, "No."

The Buddha then said to Ānanda: "From this cause and condition, you should understand that it is from this root, from this habit, from this cause and condition that aging and death arise. Because of birth, Ānanda, aging and death come to be. The condition of birth, Ānanda, is aging and death. If someone asks: 'Does existence have a condition for birth?' You may answer: 'Existence has a condition for birth.' 'What is the condition for birth?' 'It is because of existence that birth occurs.' From this, Ānanda, you should understand the conditions: because this exists, birth comes from existence. If, Ānanda, the condition of existence were absent, would there still be fish and fish species, birds and bird species, mosquitoes and mosquito species, dragons and dragon species, spirits and spirit species, ghosts and ghost species, humans and human species? As each kind would appear according to its own kind—if none existed at all, then there would be nothing at all. If all, Ānanda, were absent, would birth still occur?"

Ananda replied, "No."

Therefore, Ānanda, from this arising, from this root, from this accumulation, from this cause and condition, existence comes to be because of grasping at existence. From the cause and condition of existence, Ānanda, birth arises. If someone asks: “Is there existence due to a cause?” You should answer: “Yes, there is.” “What is the cause, Ānanda, of existence?” You may reply: “Grasping is the cause; through the cause and condition of grasping, existence comes to be.” Thus it is clearly seen: grasping is the cause of existence. Suppose, Ānanda, the cause of grasping did not exist—then there would be no existence from grasping. In all cases, Ānanda, if there is no grasping, how could existence appear?

Ananda replied: "No."

Thus, Ānanda, it is from this that arising occurs, from this that it is based, from this that it is conditioned, from this cause that feeling comes to be. With feeling as condition, Ānanda, there is becoming; with becoming as condition, Ānanda, there is feeling. If asked: "What is the cause of feeling?" one should answer: "Craving is the cause." From this cause, Ānanda, you should understand: with craving as condition, there is feeling. If, Ānanda, there were no craving, there would be no feeling, nor any feeling to come. All this, Ānanda, without craving—would there be feeling? Would there even be the name of feeling?

Ananda replied, "No."

"Thus, Ananda, these things originate from craving, are rooted in craving, arise from craving, and are conditioned by craving. Craving is the condition for feeling. Ananda, craving is the condition for feeling. In the same way, Ananda, craving is the condition for seeking, seeking for gain, gain for calculation, calculation for desire, and desire for the arising of pursuit. Because of craving, there is no willingness to let go of miserliness; because of not letting go of miserliness, there is family; because of family, there is guarding. From guarding, Ananda, there arises the use of weapons and violence. From weapons and violence, there come quarrels, disputes, slander, deceit, gossip, and many kinds of evil. Ananda, if there were originally no craving and no guarding, and no attachment, then, Ananda, since there is no attachment, how could there be weapons, quarrels, disputes, slander, deceit, gossip, and all these evil things?"

Ananda replied, "No."

Ananda replied, "No."
