> Chapter 12: Respect the True Teaching

> Furthermore, Subhuti, wherever this scripture is proclaimed—even just a passage of four lines—you should know that all beings in the world, gods, humans, and spirits alike, should honor that place as they would a sacred monument. How much more so should someone who can fully embrace, recite, and study it? Subhuti, understand that such a person attains the most supreme, rare, and wondrous teaching. Wherever this scripture is present, the Buddha is present, and the Buddha's respected disciples are also there.

> The Sixth Patriarch said: "To speak freely means to speak of ordinary matters with ordinary people, and sacred matters with sacred people." Xie said: "A pagoda is where the Dharmakaya is enshrined; a temple is where images are erected in the vastness of space. Wherever you are, when you see a person, you teach this sutra. Always practice with a mind that seeks nothing and clings to nothing, so that listeners may give rise to a pure mind. This is true offering. In this very body is the complete body and complete relics of the Tathagata. Therefore it is said, 'As though it were a Buddha pagoda or temple.'"

> Master Guo said: The mind itself is Buddha — there is no other Buddha. Buddha itself is mind — there is no other mind. This is like a fist forming a palm, or water becoming waves. The waves are just water, and the palm is just the fist.

> "A disciple is called 'younger brother' because they study behind the teacher, and 'child' because their understanding is born from the teacher. 'Venerable disciples' refers to those disciples worthy of respect, such as the great disciples and bodhisattvas."

> The king of a country in eastern India invited the Twenty-Seventh Patriarch, Prajñātārā, for a meal. The king asked, "Why don't you read the scriptures?" The Patriarch replied, "When I breathe in, I do not dwell in the realms of the five aggregates; when I breathe out, I am not entangled in any conditioned phenomena. I constantly turn the wheel of such a sutra, rolling out hundreds of thousands of billions of scrolls. The essence of the scriptures is not confined to any single place, and it is also present wherever there is a Buddha."
