> (Dharma 58) Two Parrots Hear the Four Noble Truths, Chapter 51 <note>In the Dan edition, this is numbered 58</note>

> Thus have I heard:

> At that time, the Buddha was residing in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor, in the kingdom of Śrāvastī. At that time, the elder Sudatta had deep faith in the Buddha and his teachings, and served as a benefactor to the monastic community, providing everything they needed. The monks, according to their needs, came and went daily, teaching and guiding him. In Sudatta's household, there were two parrots: one named Liti and the other named Sheliuti. They were naturally clever and could understand human speech. Whenever the monks came and went, the parrots would first announce their arrival to the household, who would then prepare the seats and welcome them joyfully. At that time, Ananda went to Sudatta's home and, seeing how intelligent and sharp the birds were, took a liking to them. He said to them, "I wish to teach you the Dharma." The two birds were delighted. He then taught them the Four Noble Truths and instructed them to recite and study them, speaking this verse:

> <note>In Chinese, this is called Suffering, Accumulation, Cessation, and Path.</note><row>“Dukkha, Samudaya, Nirodha, Magga”</row>

> There was a tree in front of the gate, where two birds heard the Dharma. Filled with joy, they recited and practiced it, flying up and down the tree seven times, chanting the profound teachings of the Four Noble Truths they had received. That evening, as they roosted in the tree, a wild fox ate them. But because of their virtuous minds, they were reborn in the heavens.

> Venerable Ananda, when the time came the next day, put on his robe, took his bowl, and entered the city to beg for food. He heard that two parrots had been killed by a fox, and felt deep compassion for them. Returning, he told the Buddha, "In Sudatta's household there were two parrots. Yesterday, your disciple taught them to recite the Four Noble Truths, and that night they passed away. I do not know where their consciousness has gone. I only wish the Tathāgata, out of compassion, would show me where they have been reborn!"
