### （四三）磨大石喻

> The Parable of Grinding a Great Stone

譬如有人，磨一大石勤加功力，經歷日月作小戲牛，用功既重所期甚輕。世間之人亦復如是，磨大石者喻於學問精勤勞苦，作小牛者喻於名聞互相是非。夫為學者研思精微博通多識，宜應履行遠求勝果，方求名譽憍慢貢高，增長過患。

> Consider someone who diligently grinds a large stone day after day, putting in immense effort to carve a small toy ox. The labor is heavy, but the reward is trivial. People in the world are just like this. Grinding the large stone represents the toil and diligence of study and learning. Carving the small ox represents the pursuit of fame and reputation, where people argue over right and wrong. A true learner should delve deeply, think with precision, broaden their understanding, and master many fields. They ought to practice earnestly and strive for the supreme fruit of enlightenment. Yet, if they merely seek fame and reputation, giving rise to arrogance and conceit, they only increase their faults and suffering.
