### （五三）師患脚付二弟子喻

> The Parable of the Master with a Sore Foot and His Two Disciples

譬如一師有二弟子，其師患脚，遣二弟子人當一脚隨時按摩。其二弟子常相憎嫉，一弟子行，其一弟子捉其所當按摩之脚以石打折；彼既來已，忿其如是，復捉其人所按之脚尋復打折。佛法學徒亦復如是，方等學者非斥小乘，小乘學者復非方等，故使大聖法典二途兼亡。

> Imagine a teacher with two disciples. The teacher had a foot ailment, so he sent each disciple to massage one of his feet regularly. But these two disciples constantly harbored jealousy and resentment toward each other. When one disciple stepped away, the other grabbed the foot he was supposed to massage and broke it with a stone. When the first disciple returned and saw what had happened, he became furious and, in turn, grabbed the foot the other was massaging and broke it as well. In the same way, followers of the Dharma often act. Those who study the Mahayana teachings dismiss the Hinayana, while those who follow the Hinayana reject the Mahayana. In doing so, they cause both paths of the Buddha's sacred teachings to be lost.
