This is what I heard:
At that time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti. Then a great assembly of bhikkhus, while on their alms round, approached the Kariyaka meditation ground. Sitting together, they pondered: "In past ages, which Buddhas appeared? What were their clans and lifespans, and what was the meaning of this?" Having reflected thus, they questioned one another but could not find the answer.
At that time, the World-Honored One, knowing what this monk was contemplating, rose from his seat and went to the Kaliri meditation ground. There he sat down cross-legged. The monks then bowed their heads to the ground at his feet and stood to one side, joining their palms respectfully and gazing at him with single-minded reverence.
The Buddha asked, "Monks, what do you think?" The monks replied, "We have considered this, but we cannot know which Buddhas appeared in the past, nor their families or lifespans."
The Buddha said to the monks, "Would you like to hear about it?" The monks answered, "Now is the time. We ask you to explain it to us."
The Buddha said: "Listen carefully, and I will tell you. Ninety-one eons ago, the Buddha Vipassī, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world. Thirty-one eons ago, the Buddha Sikhī and the Buddha Vessabhū, the Worthy Ones, the Perfectly Enlightened Ones, appeared in the world. In the sixth eon of this Fortunate Eon, the Buddha Kakusandha, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world. In the seventh eon, the Buddha Koṇāgamana, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world. In the eighth eon, the Buddha Kassapa, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world. In the ninth eon, I, Śākyamuni Buddha, have appeared in the world as the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One. Furthermore, in past eons, the Buddhas Vipassī, Sikhī, and Vessabhū proclaimed the pure precepts of morality and perfected the supreme practice of Wisdom."
Furthermore, in this Worthy Aeon, Krakucchanda Buddha, Kanakamuni Buddha, and Kāśyapa Buddha also taught the pure precepts and the methods of meditation, liberation, and insight. The teachings I proclaim are likewise.
O monks! In the past, Vipaśyin Buddha, born of the Kṣatriya caste, gave rise to pure faith, left the household life, and attained perfect enlightenment. Śikhin Buddha and Viśvabhū Buddha were also of Kṣatriya birth. Krakucchanda Buddha, Kanakamuni Buddha, and Kāśyapa Buddha were of Brahmin birth. I myself was born in the palace of King Śuddhodana, of Kṣatriya lineage.
Then, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, spoke in verse:
"I speak of the past ages, In the ninety-first kalpa, There was Vipassī, Who appeared in the world.
In the thirty-first kalpa, Sikhī and Vessabhū, Such fully enlightened ones, All were of the Kshatriya caste.
Kakusandha the Tathāgata, Was of the Brahmin caste, Konāgamana and Kassapa, Their caste was also the same.
I dwell in Jambudvīpa, As the son of Śuddhodana, Though I attained the Buddha's enlightenment, I too am of the Kshatriya caste."
Then, after reciting this verse, the World-Honored One addressed the assembly of monks, saying: "Listen carefully! I will now tell you the clan names of the seven Buddhas, the Tathagatas, the Worthy Ones, the Perfectly Enlightened Ones. Vipashyin Buddha, Shikhin Buddha, and Vishvabhu Buddha were of the Kashyapa clan. Krakucchanda Buddha, Kanakamuni Buddha, and Kashyapa Buddha were of the Gautama clan. Shakyamuni Tathagata is of the Shakyamuni clan."
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses once more:
Vipassi, Sikhi, and Vessabhu—these three Buddhas all came from the Konḍañña clan.
Kakusandha, Koṇāgamana, and Kassapa—these three Buddhas all came from the Kassapa clan.
I, here in Jambudvīpa, born in the palace of King Suddhodana, renounced the world and attained Enlightenment—I am of the Gotama clan.
At that time, after the World-Honored One had spoken this verse, he addressed the assembly of monks, saying: "Listen carefully! I will now speak of the lifespans of the Seven Buddhas, the Tathāgatas, the Worthy Ones, the Perfectly Enlightened Ones.
Vipaśyin Buddha, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world and lived for eighty thousand years.
Śikhin Buddha, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world and lived for seventy thousand years.
Viśvabhū Buddha, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world and lived for sixty thousand years.
Krakucchanda Buddha, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world and lived for forty thousand years.
Kanakamuni Buddha, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world and lived for thirty thousand years.
Kaśyapa Buddha, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, appeared in the world and lived for twenty thousand years.
I, who teach beings in this age of five impurities, have a lifespan of one hundred years."
At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses once more:
