> Chapter 1: Aspiration and Conduct on the Path

> First, observe the three realms—to cultivate a sense of weariness and detachment. Next, seek out virtuous friends—to find a path of liberation. Then, inquire morning and evening—to maintain respect and propriety. After that, carefully assess their well-being—to understand how to serve and care for them. Then ask what they are doing—to learn how to assist them directly. Keep your gaze steady and unwavering—to develop deep reverence. Repeatedly contemplate the essential teachings—to engage in proper practice. Present your understanding for examination—to discern right from wrong. Test your strength and endurance—to know what is ripe and what is raw. When doubts arise from difficulties, be ready to receive profound teachings. Reflect carefully and thoroughly—to seek what is true and appropriate. Practice diligently day and night—fearing that opportunities may be missed. Focus wholeheartedly on one path—to accomplish your practice. Devote yourself entirely to the Dharma—to repay its profound kindness. If your faith is weak and your resolve unsteady, if your practice is coarse and your understanding shallow, drifting along with circumstances, then when things arise, your mind follows them, and when nothing is happening, your thoughts rest in emptiness. This is not the equanimity that sees both movement and stillness, but rather a compliance with the gains and losses of existence and non-existence. Yet the path does not unfold without effort— it progresses according to the merit of your practice.
