The Buddha's Teaching on the Dharma Seal
Translated by Dharma Master Shi Hu, Imperial Commissioner of the Western Regions, Court Attendant, and Examiner of the Court of State Ceremonial,
At that time, the Buddha was in the city of Shravasti, together with the assembly of bhikkhus. Then, the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "You should know that there is a sacred Dharma Seal. I will now explain it to you in detail. You should arouse pure knowledge and vision, listen attentively, receive it mindfully, reflect carefully, and remember it well."
Then, the bhikkhus replied to the Buddha: "Excellent, World-Honored One! Please expound it. We are eager to hear."
The Buddha said: "Monks, emptiness has no existence, no deluded thoughts, no arising, no ceasing, and is beyond all knowledge and views. Why? Because emptiness has no location, no form or appearance, is not an object of thought, originally unarisen, beyond the reach of knowledge and perception, and free from all attachments. Being free from attachment, it encompasses all phenomena, abiding in the view of equality—this is the true view. Monks, you should understand: emptiness is like this, and all phenomena are likewise. This is called the Dharma Seal."
Furthermore, O Bhikkhus, this Dharma Seal is the Three Gates of Liberation. It is the fundamental Dharma of all Buddhas, the eye of all Buddhas, and the very destination to which all Buddhas return. Therefore, listen carefully, receive it well, remember it, reflect upon it, and observe it as it truly is.
Further, monks: when a practitioner goes to the forest, sits at the foot of a tree, or in any quiet place, let them observe clearly: form is suffering, is empty, is impermanent. Let them develop disenchantment and abide in balanced understanding. In the same way, observe feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness: they are suffering, they are empty, they are impermanent. Let them develop disenchantment and abide in balanced understanding. Monks, the aggregates are originally empty, born from the mind. When mental activity ceases, the aggregates become disengaged. To understand this is true liberation. Once truly liberated, one lets go of all views and knowledge. This is called the Gate of Liberation through Emptiness.
"Furthermore, when abiding in meditative concentration, observe how all forms and appearances completely cease, free from all attachment to existence. In the same way, sounds, scents, tastes, touches, and mental objects also cease entirely, free from all attachment to existence. This kind of observation is called the 'Door to Liberation through the Signless.' Upon entering this door of liberation, one attains purity of knowledge and vision. Through this purity, greed, anger, and delusion are all completely eliminated. Once these are eliminated, one abides in balanced, equal view. Abiding in this view, one is freed from the view of a self and the view of what belongs to a self. Thus, one understands all views as having no arising, no foundation.
At that time, all the monks, having heard this teaching, were filled with great joy. They bowed in reverence and accepted it with faith.
