> Preface to the Heart Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom

> Composed by the Tang Dynasty Monk Huizhong

> The Dharma-nature is boundless, how could it be measured by the mind? True Suchness is without form, how could it be described by words? Thus, sentient beings are vast and endless, the ocean of Dharma is wide and without limit. If one broadly seeks textual meanings, it is like seeking forms within a mirror; if one further ceases thoughts and contemplates emptiness, it is again like fleeing from a shadow in broad daylight. This sutra is like the great earth— what thing is not born from the earth? All Buddhas point solely to the One Mind— what dharma is not established by the mind? Simply realize the mind-ground, thus it is called the great dhāraṇī; awaken to the unproduced nature of dharmas, this is named wondrous enlightenment. A single thought transcends— why dwell in elaborate discussions?

> The Heart Sutra

> Translated by the Tripitaka Master Xuanzang.

> Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, while practicing the profound Prajñāpāramitā, clearly perceived that the five aggregates are all empty, and thus crossed beyond all suffering and affliction.

> Shariputra, form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form; form itself is emptiness, emptiness itself is form. Sensation, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are also like this.

> Shariputra, all dharmas are marked by emptiness; they do not appear nor disappear, are not defiled nor pure, do not increase nor decrease. Therefore, in emptiness there is no form, no feeling, no perception, no volition, no consciousness; no eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind; no form, sound, scent, taste, touch, dharma; no realm of sight, up to no realm of consciousness; no ignorance nor end of ignorance, up to no old age and death nor end of old age and death; no suffering, no origin, no cessation, no path; no wisdom, and no attainment.

> Because there is nothing to attain, the bodhisattva, relying on the perfection of wisdom, has no obstructions in mind. Having no obstructions, there is no fear; far removed from inverted views and illusory dreams, one ultimately reaches nirvana. All buddhas of the past, present, and future, relying on the perfection of wisdom, attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi.

> Therefore, know that Prajñāpāramitā is the great divine mantra, the great luminous mantra, the supreme mantra, the unequalled mantra. It can remove all suffering; it is true and not false. Thus, the Prajñāpāramitā mantra is spoken.

> Then he spoke the mantra, saying:

> Gate gate pāragate pārasaṃgate bodhi svāhā.
