> Chapter 26

> Once, the Buddha was staying in the kingdom of Shravasti, at the Jetavana Grove, the garden of Anathapindika. The Buddha then addressed the monks: "The elephant has five qualities that make it fit for the king's service, suitable for the king's use, pleasing to the king's heart, and able to guide the king according to the royal way. What are the five? First, it heeds and remembers. Second, it can stand firm. Third, it can fight. Fourth, it can run. Fifth, it can guard itself. What does it mean, monks, when the royal elephant guards itself? If the elephant, entering the battlefield, can fight with its front legs and protect its rear legs, its hips, back, belly, shoulders, neck, and trunk, this is called guarding itself. If a monk possesses these five qualities, he is worthy of honor and renown, worthy of receiving reverential salutation from others, and is an inexhaustible field of merit. What are the five? Heeding and remembering is the first. Being able to stand firm is the second. Being able to endure is the third. Acting accordingly is the fourth. Guarding oneself is the fifth. What does it mean to resist the temptations of taste, touch, and thought, refusing to be swayed by them? Thus, monks, a monk who guards himself is guarding against the six sense bases. The second quality is meditative concentration. The third, endurance, is patience. The fourth, acting accordingly, is moral discipline. The fifth, heeding and remembering, is diligent effort. A practitioner who possesses these five qualities is worthy of honor and renown, worthy of receiving reverential salutation from others, and is an inexhaustible field of merit. The disciples, hearing this, were delighted and received the teaching."
