The Śākyamuni Tathāgata's Method of Eradicating Suffering Through Manifestation of Great Spiritual Transformation and the Flying Alms Bowl (Transmitted by Prajñā) This is a Buddhist scripture of the Tang Dynasty, traditionally attributed to the translation by the Tripitaka Master Prajñā, classified among the Esoteric Buddhist texts. The sutra records how Śākyamuni Buddha, to rescue sentient beings, manifests spiritual powers, appearing in the form of a great flying alms bowl to eradicate the sufferings of beings through esoteric methods. Its contents include mantras of spiritual transformation, visualization rituals, and stages of practice, embodying the Mahayana Buddhist ideals of compassionate salvation and the Esoteric Buddhist teaching of attaining buddhahood in this very body. This sutra held significant importance in the dissemination of Esoteric Buddhism during the Tang Dynasty, reflecting the integration of Chinese esoteric methods with Indian Tantric Buddhism, and provides valuable documentary evidence for the study of Esoteric Buddhist development in the Tang period.

Buddha Shakyamuni Tathagata’s Great Transformation for Alleviating Suffering and the Flying Empty Great Bowl Method

Tripitaka Master Prajna's Transmission

Once, the Buddha Shakyamuni was staying at the peak of Snow Mountain. Five hundred monks, countless bodhisattvas, the eight kinds of celestial beings, and a vast multitude had gathered together to hear the Dharma. At that time, the assembly grew weary and food was hard to come by. The World-Honored One then entered the great compassionate samadhi. From within the radiant light, the Tathagata’s great alms bowl emerged. It sailed through the sky and departed, its destination unknown. The great assembly was startled and bewildered. Then, the Buddha’s great alms bowl returned, its bowl filled with rice.

At that time, the Tathagata rose from his meditation and said to the assembly, "All of you should now eat this." After he spoke these words, the assembly rejoiced and ate the food from the bowl. Yet there remained more food, inexhaustible. Its fragrance spread throughout the entire universe of a thousand million worlds, and even the beings in hells, hungry ghosts, and animals were all fully satisfied.

Then Manjushri addressed the Buddha, saying: "World-Honored One, by what divine power did you send this great bowl flying to satisfy the assembly and relieve the suffering of beings in the three realms and eight difficult states? For us and future generations who seek the Dharma and cultivate the path, what practice should we follow to succeed in Buddhas' work and benefit beings? I only ask the Great Sage to explain this essential teaching."

The Buddha told Manjushri: "Exactly so, good man. I shall teach this Dharma now to benefit beings and support practitioners. In the past, I lived as a great sage in the snowy mountain caves. For a long time, I had no food or clothing and could not obtain any. At that time, I had ten thousand disciples who practiced austerities with me. Then a Garuda king came and said to me: 'I wish to take the great sage's alms bowl, travel to heaven and the human realm, fill it with food and clothing, and return to offer it to the assembly.' I agreed. Immediately, the Garuda king carried the bowl and flew throughout the great chiliocosm. In a single moment, he returned with the bowl full of clothing and food. The assembly rejoiced, and all were at peace.

Know this: the sage of that time is none other than myself today. I will now explain this Dharma. First, choose a pure place—a remote mountain, deep forest, high cliff, or by a great river, ocean, or clear spring. Fast and practice, consuming only five-leaf pine needles and various fruits. Recite the Tathagata's Great Bowl Mantra and form its mudra. Practice continuously through the six periods of day and night without letting the sound cease. Before three days pass, you will accomplish the mudra."

First, place your right hand palm-up at the level of your heart. Then place your left hand palm-down, resting it on your right palm so that the tip of your left little finger touches the tip of your right thumb, and the tip of your left thumb touches the tip of your right little finger. The mantra goes:

Namo to all the Buddhas of the three times. Om, the Guardian of the World, who is firmly established in meditation, who upholds the dharma, who is a great enlightened being, who is the Buddha’s banner, Svaha.

Recite this mantra one million times. This dharma-seal mantra possesses great diligence and will be protected and empowered by the spiritual power of all Tathagatas. Form this mudra and recite this mantra, and you will attain accomplishment.

If you recite it one hundred and eight times for beings in the hells and hungry ghost realms, those beings will be satiated with plenty of food. If you travel through the wilderness, forming this mudra and reciting this mantra, the spirits of the wild will not disturb you.

Thus, your bowl will follow your mind, flying freely in all directions. When practicing this dharma, call upon Swift Garuda King as your messenger. By the spiritual power of the Tathagatas, this king will follow and serve you. The practitioner should understand this: the empty bowl will turn on its own as the mantra is recited.

I take refuge in the Buddha. I take refuge in the Dharma. I take refuge in the Sangha. I bow to the one who removes obstacles. The dharani turns, the dharani turns. So be it.

When performing this practice, first purify a room by sprinkling it with scented water. Pay homage to the Buddhas in the four directions. Then, call a young boy, instruct him to wash his hands and face, and also pay homage to the Buddhas. Spread a clean mat on the ground, and place a bowl that has been washed with scented water on the mat. Put clean clothes inside the bowl. Ask the boy to press his knees on both sides of the bowl, placing both hands on the ground. The chanting master should repeatedly recite the mantra: "As soon as you say 'turn,' it turns." Then, invite the Three Jewels and all the great spirit kings through the mantra.
