Moon Lamp Samadhi Sutra, Volume 2
Translated by the Indian Tripitaka Master Narendrayaśas of the Northern Qi Dynasty
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed Moonlight Youth, saying: "In the past, an immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable, countless kalpas ago, there was a Buddha named Glorious-Virtue Tathagata—the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, the One Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct, the Well-Gone One, the Knower of the World, the Unsurpassed One, the Tamer of Men, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the World-Honored One—who appeared in the world."
"Child, at that time, at the first great assembly gathered around the Thus-Come-One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One named Voice-Virtue, there were eight hundred million voice-hearers. All were Arhats. Their outflows had been exhausted. They had attained their own benefit. They had severed all bonds of existence. Relying on the true teaching, their minds were well liberated, able to reach the shore of mastery over all states of mind.
At the second great assembly, there were seven hundred million beings gathered. At the third great assembly, there were six hundred million. All were likewise great Arhats. Their outflows had been exhausted. They had attained their own benefit. They had severed all bonds of existence. Relying on the true teaching, their minds were well liberated, able to reach the shore of mastery over all states of mind."
