The Moon Lamp Samādhi Sutra Spoken by the Buddha is an important Mahāyāna Buddhist scripture translated during the Liu Song dynasty by the eminent monk Xiān Gong. Delivered by the Buddha to the youth Candraprabha, this sutra expounds the methods and merits of cultivating samādhi (meditative concentration), emphasizing the attainment of wisdom and liberation through meditative practice. Its contents encompass the practice of the bodhisattva path, the philosophy of śūnyatā (emptiness), and the Mahāyāna spirit of compassion and benefiting others. Holding a significant position within Buddhist meditation theory, this sutra reflects the development of Chan (meditation) studies during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period and has exerted a profound influence on later Chan Buddhism and the Mahāyāna practice system. It remains a vital text for the study of Chinese Buddhist intellectual history and meditative practice.

Song Dynasty Monk Xian Gong Translation

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in Śrāvastī, in the Jeta Grove, the Garden of Anāthapiṇḍada, together with a great assembly of five hundred bhikṣus, sixty thousand bodhisattvas, and countless gods and humans. At that time, the bodhisattva Mañjuśrī was seated among that assembly.

At that time, the Buddha addressed Mañjuśrī, saying: "Youth! When a bodhisattva practices giving, there are ten matters. What are these ten? First, to truly remove a mind of jealousy; second, to give with a mind that is always pure; third, that even countless hundreds of thousands of people cannot seize his wealth; fourth, that he will pass away with supreme and wondrous [merit]; fifth, that he will be born into a family of great nobility; sixth, that wherever he is born, he will be fond of giving; seventh, that he will be cherished and remembered by the fourfold assembly; eighth, that he will be fearless, will enter assemblies without hindrance, and his fame will be heard throughout the ten directions; ninth, that in youth his hands and feet will be soft and supple; tenth, that he will always delight in good friends, up to sitting under the tree of enlightenment. Youth! These are the ten matters of a bodhisattva’s practice of giving."

The Buddha then spoke a verse:

「已遠除於嫉妬,意常好布施者;
所生處意常樂,而好喜於布施;
於眾會無所畏,所至處無疑難;
其手足常柔軟,所欲得不復難;
終不復生嫉妬意,意常好樂欲布施;
即生於大豪富家,意常喜樂而布施;
得善知識不復難,常見諸佛及弟子;

He who has long abandoned jealousy, And whose mind delights in giving, Passing away while holding supreme offerings, Is reborn into a family of great wealth.

Wherever he is born, his mind is ever joyful, And he takes pleasure in generosity; He is cherished by all beings, Both householders and renunciants.

In assemblies he is without fear, Wherever he goes he meets no hindrance; His fame spreads far and wide, Throughout kingdoms, districts, and towns.

His hands and feet are ever soft, Whatever he desires is not hard to obtain; He easily meets good friends— The Buddhas and their disciples.

He never again gives rise to jealousy, His mind ever delights in giving; Holding supreme offerings at life’s end, Thus he acts without envy.

He is born into a family of great fortune, His mind ever joyful and generous; Loved by countless millions of people— Such are the deeds of one who gives gladly.

Meeting good friends is no difficulty, He often sees the Buddhas and their disciples; Seeing them, he delights in making offerings— Such are the deeds of one who gives.

The Buddha addressed the youth, saying: "A bodhisattva who upholds pure precepts accomplishes ten matters. What are these ten? First, fulfilling one's vows. Second, learning the Buddha's path. Third, always honoring and delighting in wisdom. Fourth, never speaking falsely even unto death. Fifth, not wavering in mind when seeing the world. Sixth, abandoning birth and death. Seventh, seeking nirvana. Eighth, practicing solitude. Ninth, attaining samadhi. Tenth, practicing without poverty. Youth, these are the ten matters of a bodhisattva's pure upholding of precepts." Then the Buddha spoke this verse:

「即具足其所願,學諸佛之道行;
不復轉其所願,亦不轉慎諸行;
常在寂寞處行,即便得於三昧;
其人即具所可願,是菩薩學諸佛道;
持願甚堅不復難,終不復動所采建;
其意不復著所念,其人如是立戒彊;

Fulfilling all their aspirations, they practice the way of all Buddhas; Ever delighting in the noble Wisdom, they are never in fear.

They do not turn back from their vows, nor waver in careful practice; Always abandoning and distancing themselves from birth and death, they seek the path to Nirvāṇa.

Dwelling constantly in solitary places, they attain samādhi; Never experiencing poverty, they stand firm in the precepts.

Such a person attains all that is wished for—this is the bodhisattva learning the way of the Buddhas; The wise do not boast among people, and such a one’s precepts are pure.

Holding to vows with unwavering resolve, never again shaken in what they have undertaken; Having seen the countless evils of birth and death, they abandon them and seek the path to Nirvāṇa.

Their mind no longer clings to thoughts, and thus they stand strong in the precepts; Gaining a pure land without obstruction—such is the conduct of one with pure precepts.

The Buddha addressed the youth, saying: "A bodhisattva who abides in forbearance attains ten benefits. What are these ten? First, fire cannot burn them; second, blades cannot harm them; third, poison cannot affect them; fourth, water cannot drown them; fifth, non-human beings protect them; sixth, they obtain adorned and majestic bodily marks; seventh, they close off all evil destinies; eighth, they are readily reborn in the Brahma heavens; ninth, they attain peace and security day and night; tenth, they abide in bliss without wavering. Youth, these are the ten benefits for a bodhisattva who dwells in forbearance." The Buddha then spoke this verse:

「火不能燒其人,刀亦不能傷害;
諸非人悉護之,即得三十二相;
求索諸梵及釋,彼亦不而難致;
刀及火亦不能傷,行於毒中不能害;
即身得三十二相,其人不復畏惡道;
晝夜即得安隱行,常好喜身得安定;

Fire cannot burn such a person, nor can blades harm them; Poison cannot take effect, nor can water drown them. All non-humans protect them, and they attain the thirty-two marks; Thus are all evil paths closed—such is the virtue of the forbearing one.

Seeking Brahmā and Śakra, they are not hard to obtain; They always gain peaceful conduct, fully awakening to impermanence.

Blades and fire cannot injure them, walking amid poison brings no harm; Devas, humans, ghosts, and spirits guard them—such is the conduct of the forbearing one.

They attain the thirty-two marks in this very body, no longer fearing evil paths; Upon death, they are born in the Brahmā heavens—such is the way of one who practices loving-kindness.

Day and night they gain peaceful conduct, ever joyful, their body at ease; Toward all beings their mind is pure, never harboring wrathful intent.

The Buddha addressed the youth, saying: "There are ten aspects to a bodhisattva's vigor. What are these ten? First, possessing majestic spiritual power. Second, being protected by all buddhas. Third, being protected by non-human beings as well. Fourth, upon hearing the Dharma, never forgetting or distorting it. Fifth, obtaining teachings one has not heard before. Sixth, attaining sublime and profound wisdom. Seventh, attaining various samādhis. Eighth, never falling ill. Ninth, receiving food and drink peacefully and securely. Tenth, attaining a gentle and pliant nature, like the utpala flower, not rigid. Youth! These are the ten aspects of a bodhisattva's practice of vigor." Then the Buddha spoke this verse:

「常為得有威神,終不轉犯諸惡;
聞經法亦不忘,未聞者求得了;
得同諸三昧行,終無有疾病時;
所飯食得安隱,即得為精進行;
清白法亦如是,令菩薩稍稍成;
多陀竭精進行,以進越無數劫;
其精進者有威神,常為諸佛所擁護;
所聞者終不復忘,及復得餘眾法行;
種種三昧常自增,彼終無有疾病時;
晝夜成就清白行,精進之者無有休;

"One who is ever endowed with majestic power will never revert to committing evils; All non-human beings protect him, and he swiftly attains the Buddha-way. Hearing the sutra-dharma, he never forgets; what he has not heard, he seeks and comprehends. Such a person gains lofty clarity; the diligent one possesses this virtue. He attains sameness with all samādhi practices, and never suffers from illness; The diligent one is accompanied by wisdom, and such a person attains the Buddha-way practice. The food he consumes brings peace and stability, and thus he achieves diligent practice; Just as an utpala flower grows in water, gradually increasing and reaching fullness, So too the pure white dharma causes the bodhisattva to gradually mature; None can ultimately oppose him, and he attains a place of heavenly bliss. Tathāgata's diligent practice, through exertion transcends countless kalpas; All bodhisattvas strive diligently, and their cultivated practices are fully expounded. The diligent one possesses majestic power, ever protected by all buddhas; And all who uphold this path-practice will attain the Buddha-way before long. What he hears he never again forgets, and moreover gains other dharma practices; Such a person's wisdom gradually increases—the diligent one experiences these matters. All kinds of samādhi constantly grow within him, and he never has times of illness; All those who partake of food attain peace and stability. Day and night he accomplishes pure white practice, the diligent one never rests; Such a person swiftly attains buddhahood before long—thus is the noble one who practices diligence."

The Buddha addressed the youth, saying: "A bodhisattva who practices meditation possesses ten essential practices. What are these ten? First, dedicated abiding in concentration; second, undertaking the practice of the path; third, being free from fear and difficulty; fourth, rightly restraining the faculties; fifth, being beloved by people; sixth, being far removed from desire; seventh, not wavering in single-mindedness; eighth, being liberated from the realm of Māra; ninth, abiding in the realm of the Buddha; tenth, attaining liberation. Youth! These are the ten essential practices of a meditating bodhisattva." Then the Buddha spoke this verse:

「其人不轉所行,即為住諦之行;
所修無所復著,諸根已為寂定;
其人已離愛欲,安隱坐於一心;
專行者有是持,其獨樂樹間者;
其菩薩住轉不行,皆棄捐於不當行;
其人終無貪著時,行安隱者賢不貪;
行空樹間無所畏,其人終無著貪時;
終不著欲亦不貪,如是即脫魔境界;

He who does not turn from his practice, thus abides in the practice of truth; Diligently carrying out the deeds of the path, he abandons unwholesome conduct.

His cultivation is without attachment, his faculties are already tranquil; Thus he attains peaceful joy, sitting in contemplation of the deeds of the path.

He has already left behind craving and desire, peacefully abiding in one-pointedness; Having departed from the realm of Māra, he dwells in the realm of the Buddha.

The diligent practitioner possesses this steadfastness, he who delights alone among the trees; He thereby enters the practice of liberation, and accomplishes the ten matters.

The bodhisattva abides without turning, entirely discarding what should not be done; Abandoning unwholesome conduct, he delights in wholesome conduct—one who contemplates samādhi accomplishes this.

He never gives rise to greed or attachment; the peaceful practitioner, wise and free from craving, With body and mind well aware, maintains precepts—one who practices samādhi accomplishes this.

Dwelling empty among trees, fearless, he never gives rise to greed or attachment; All non-humans cherish him—thus, far removed from desire, he practices alone.

Never attached to desire nor craving, thus he is freed from the realm of Māra; He abides in the realm of the Tathāgata, and such a one is entirely liberated from wrongdoings.

The Buddha addressed the youth, saying: "A bodhisattva practicing the perfection of wisdom has ten aspects. What are these ten? First, giving away all possessions in generosity without any expectation; second, not transgressing the precepts, yet not adorning oneself with them; third, abiding in the power of patience, dwelling without notions of self or others; fourth, practicing diligence without attachment to body or life; fifth, practicing meditation without abiding in meditation; sixth, subduing the obstructive demons; seventh, being unmoved by the ninety-six kinds of heterodox views; eighth, personally realizing the nature of birth and death; ninth, having compassion for all beings; tenth, not seeking the stage of a śrāvaka or pratyekabuddha. Youth, these are the ten aspects of a bodhisattva practicing the perfection of wisdom." Then the Buddha spoke in verse:

「其人所施皆等,亦不念望其報;
行忍辱及智慧,終無有人之想;
行一心及智慧,無所住無有想;
九十六種之道,皆無能動搖者;
於一切眾生所,有大悲哀之行;
所有皆施無希望,為不犯戒不念惡;
精進為在空閑處,禪無有想亦無住;
諸外道者不能動,其人即為知生死;
諸弟子及緣一覺,於彼終無念求索;

That person gives equally to all, without expecting any reward; He protects the sutras and precepts, daring not to transgress, and has no craving thoughts or attachments. He practices forbearance and wisdom, ultimately without any notion of a self; Seeing others, he is diligent, with body, will, and mind unattached. He cultivates single-mindedness and wisdom, abiding nowhere and without thought; Thus subduing the hordes of demons—this is the virtue of one with wisdom. The ninety-six kinds of paths cannot shake him; He knows and understands the matter of birth and death—this is the attainment of one with wisdom. Toward all sentient beings, he has the practice of great compassion; Toward disciples and solitary realizers, he has no thought of seeking anything. He gives all without hope, not transgressing precepts and not dwelling on faults; Practicing forbearance without notion of a person—this is the affair of one who serves wisdom. Diligence abides in solitude, meditation is without thought and without abiding; That person's wisdom subdues the demons—this is the affair of one who practices wisdom. All external paths cannot move him, that person thus knows birth and death; Having compassion for all people—this is the affair of one who practices wisdom. Toward disciples and solitary realizers, he ultimately has no thought of seeking; That person abides in the Buddha's path thus—this is the affair of one who practices wisdom.

The Buddha addressed the youth, saying: "A bodhisattva of great wisdom practices ten deeds. What are these ten? First, knowing the evil paths; second, knowing the good paths; third, resolving matters of doubt; fourth, revealing the straight path; fifth, abandoning and discarding the evil paths; sixth, abiding in the right path; seventh, dwelling at the gate of nectar; eighth, attaining the seat beneath the bodhi tree; ninth, manifesting the bright path for sentient beings; tenth, fearing not the evil paths. Youth, these are the ten deeds of a bodhisattva of great wisdom." Then the Buddha spoke in verse:

「為知了諸塵勞,悉曉了是兩事;
慧而解諸狐疑,便為現直見事;
見在於甘露門,則得坐佛樹下;
曉了無數塵勞法,知解兩事為如是;
為一切人解其疑,便為得見善正直;
常為住在甘露門,得坐在無量佛樹;

To fully comprehend all defilements, one understands these two matters; Then one abandons defilements and follows the Buddha's path.

Wisdom resolves all doubts, revealing the direct truth; Thus one discards the way of evil and abides in the right path.

Beholding the gate of nectar, one sits beneath the Buddha-tree; For sentient beings, one clarifies the true teaching, freeing them from fear of evil paths.

Understanding the countless dharmas of defilements, knowing the two matters thus; One then renounces defilements and learns the supreme wholesome dharmas.

For all beings resolving their doubts, one enables them to see the good and upright; Thus abandoning evil ways, the wise constantly dwell in the path.

Eternally abiding at the gate of nectar, seated beneath the immeasurable Buddha-tree; For countless beings manifesting clarity, such a one never fears the evil paths.

The Buddha addressed the youth, saying: "A bodhisattva who upholds the noble Dharma and bestows it upon others possesses ten qualities. What are these ten? First, abandoning evil; second, cultivating good; third, practicing as a true spiritual being; fourth, purifying the Buddha-land; fifth, sitting beneath the tree of enlightenment; sixth, bestowing provisions for the multitude; seventh, subduing all defilements; eighth, conferring wisdom upon all beings; ninth, practicing loving-kindness; tenth, attaining a mind of peace and stability in the present. Youth, these are the ten qualities of a bodhisattva who upholds the noble Dharma and bestows it upon others." Then the Buddha spoke this verse:

「諸不善皆捐之,諸善事悉奉行;
便淨其佛國土,即得無上之國;
布施一切所有,便學於諸法王;
布施於一切人,常有慈心之行;
多智便棄諸不善,其人常為在善住;
即常得清淨之國,常奉行佛道之事;
無有塵勞布施眾,便即知了己身事;
其人自知而發意,為一切人如是施;

"Abandon all that is unwholesome, and practice all that is wholesome; Dwell in the Dharma with Wisdom, and let the mind ever delight in giving.

Thus purify the Buddha-land, and attain the supreme realm; Then sit beneath the Bodhi tree, and radiate the Dharma-gift like a jewel.

Give all that one possesses, and learn from the King of Dharma; Then remove all defilements afar—such a one attains Buddhahood without difficulty.

Give to all beings, ever maintaining compassionate conduct; Free from jealousy, bringing peace to non-human beings.

The wise abandon all unwholesomeness, such a one ever abides in goodness; Steadfast and unmoving in the noble Dharma, the wise ever dwell with the Dharma.

Thus one constantly attains a pure land, ever practicing the Buddha-way; Ever abiding beneath the Bodhi tree—one who radiates the Dharma-gift accomplishes this.

Free from defilements, giving to all, one then fully understands one's own affairs; Liberated from all worldly matters, such a one is ultimately without obstruction.

Knowing this, one resolves to give thus for the sake of all beings; The compassionate one is free from jealousy, seeing all dharmas as peaceful and selfless."

The Buddha addressed the youth: "A bodhisattva who practices emptiness has ten aspects. What are these ten? First, practicing the Buddha's path; second, practicing without attachment; third, not craving rebirth; fourth, not violating the precepts; fifth, not slandering the wise; sixth, not engaging in contentious conduct; seventh, having nothing to attain; eighth, walking the solitary path; ninth, not disputing the Buddha; tenth, practicing in accordance with the Dharma. Youth, these are the ten aspects of a bodhisattva's practice of emptiness." Then the Buddha spoke this verse:

「其諸上人所行,得上尊之世界;
皆不著諸世界,於禪思安隱坐;
終不復犯戒法,持於戒無有呵;
其行道無所諍,終無有諸諍訟;
乃至亡失其命,終不謗於世尊;
於一切諸世界,佛道不可思議;
其人之行而上妙,住不在於諸外道;
其人終無有貪著,行一心者無所想;
悉曉諸空之法事,於眾所用終不著;
其人終無諍訟事,獨處行者空眾用;

Those noble beings who practice Attain the world of supreme honor; The valiant ones proceed there, Where life cannot be obtained.

They cling not to any world, Sitting serenely in meditation; Nor do they crave any birth, Thus comprehending all empty dharmas.

They never again violate the precepts, Upholding them without reproach; Throughout their lives they speak no evil, Nor slander other worthy ones.

Their practice is free from contention, Utterly without disputes or quarrels; Knowing all matters as they are, They train in accordance with the Dharma.

Even at the cost of their lives, They never slander the World-Honored One; Accumulating all dharmas, They guard their minds, fearless and unshaken.

In all worlds, The Buddha Way is inconceivable; They uphold the Buddha’s teachings, Without doubting the empty dharma.

Their conduct is sublime and wondrous, Abiding not among external paths; Practicing meditation, serene and unattached, Where there is no life, no person.

Such ones are forever free from craving, Practicing single-mindedness without thought; Knowing there is no person, no self-dharma, They ultimately have no wishes.

Fully understanding all empty dharmas, They cling not to the uses of the multitude; Forever free from thoughts of greed and attachment, They maintain pure faith in the Buddha.

They are ever free from disputes, Practicing alone, empty of worldly uses; Abiding in the Buddha Way, They uphold all the teachings of the Tathāgata.

The Buddha addressed the young disciple: "A bodhisattva who dwells in solitude practices ten things. What are these ten? First, having a pure mind; second, being free from desire; third, recollecting the Buddhas; fourth, faith in practice; fifth, unwavering wisdom; sixth, being mindful of the Buddhas; seventh, not slandering the Dharma; eighth, practicing in tranquility; ninth, attaining well-tamed abiding; tenth, wisdom in the four liberating truths. Young disciple, these are the ten practices of a bodhisattva dwelling in solitude." Then the Buddha spoke this verse:

「終無有愛欲行,常有清淨之意;
思念普世間明,其人轉而成信;
於諸佛有反復,佛終不棄捐法;
其人即得解事,獨自樂於樹間;
其人即為有清意,常皆棄捐諸惡事;
其人思念佛無上,信於諸天中天行;
於諸上人有反復,終不復棄諸法行;
便得善諦寂寞地,即疾解了諸證事;

Never again engaging in acts of desire, they always maintain a pure mind; They devote themselves to the desireless practice, dwelling alone with single-minded concentration. Contemplating the illumination throughout the world, such a person turns toward faith; Regarding Wisdom, they have no doubt—the Buddha’s Wisdom is inconceivable. Toward all Buddhas they respond with reverence; the Buddha never abandons the Dharma. Thereupon they practice tranquil meditation and thus abide in the Dharma of stillness. Such a person then attains understanding, delighting alone among the trees; They renounce wealth and profit, practicing the Way in solitude. Such a person possesses a purified mind, always abandoning all evil deeds; Their practice of stillness is unsurpassed, never again doubting the Buddha’s Wisdom. They contemplate the supreme Buddha, trusting in the conduct of the Heavenly Among Gods; Nor do they doubt the Buddha’s Wisdom—such is the state of one who practices solitude. Toward all superior beings they respond with reverence, never forsaking the practice of the Dharma; The solitary practitioner abides in stillness—such is the state of one who dwells in seclusion. They then attain the true ground of tranquility and swiftly comprehend all realizations; Constantly expounding countless sutras, such a person is never obstructed.

The Buddha addressed the young disciple: "A bodhisattva who dwells in solitude practices ten things. What are these ten? First, the practice of tranquility. Second, distancing from crowds. Third, absence of disputes. Fourth, absence of anger. Fifth, not entering into conditioned activities. Sixth, not entering into others' faults. Seventh, mindful contemplation of liberation. Eighth, abiding in serene one-pointedness. Ninth, swiftly attaining realization of liberation. Tenth, through non-attachment, achieving samādhi. Young disciple, these are the ten noble practices of a bodhisattva dwelling in solitude."

The Buddha then spoke these verses:

「常有寂寞之事,便遠離眾會人;
常無有瞋恚意,終不轉著諸界;
便為寂寞之行,常在於獨處行;
獨自在上閑處坐,常棄捐惡眾會人;
便厭於一切生死,其人無有貪眾用;
終不與人共諍訟,常獨行者樂寂寞;
便得上妙解脫事,即好坐在寂三昧;

"Often experiencing solitude, one distances from gatherings and crowds; Ultimately free from disputes, they walk the path alone.

Ever without anger or malice, never clinging to realms; Nor engaging in contention, dwelling in seclusion is virtuous.

Practicing the way of solitude, always walking alone; Thus liberation is attained, swiftly crossing over.

Sitting alone in lofty, tranquil places, always abandoning evil assemblies; Such a person never enters others' faults—this is the way of one seated among trees.

Disenchanted with all birth and death, such a person has no greed for worldly things; Nor any worldly fears—this is the way of one seated beneath a tree.

Never contending with others, the solitary walker delights in solitude; Always guarding body, speech, and mind—in seclusion, virtues are countless.

Thus attaining sublime liberation, abiding well in tranquil samādhi; Cultivating solitary practice among trees—this is the virtue of one in seclusion."

「彼不欲令知行,亦不著所為事;
亦不犯賢聖事,不有稱諛諂行;
亦不愁不歡喜,說法離於衣食;
不欲令稱不求名,常住在四賢聖行;
不自稱譽不說惡,初不說惡惡舌者;
離衣食善與法施,亦不求索於財利;

"He does not desire recognition for his actions, nor is he attached to what he does; He regards gain and loss with equal mind, and abides by the teachings.

He does not transgress the ways of the wise and noble, nor engage in flattery or deceit; He does not boast of his own goodness, nor speak ill of others.

Neither sorrowful nor overly joyful, he teaches without concern for food or clothing; His words bring joy to all, and one who receives alms possesses such virtue.

He does not seek praise or fame, but constantly dwells in the four noble practices; He does not flatter or scheme for wealth, and one who follows the teachings does so.

He does not praise himself nor speak evil, and refrains from harsh words from the start; Hearing of others' merits, he rejoices, and one who receives alms knows contentment.

Free from attachment to food and clothing, he gives the gift of the Dharma, Not seeking material gain; his words delight the virtuous, And one who receives the noble teaching does so."

Sutra of the Moon-Lamp Samadhi, Spoken by the Buddha (Single Fascicle)
