> I have heard that in ancient times, those who could move Heaven and Earth and command ghosts and spirits did so through nothing but their utter sincerity. Hence, people of the highest goodness, when truly sincere, always receive a response. The records of such people fill many volumes—so many that one cannot count them all. But those whose virtue and wisdom transcend the ordinary, whose actions are beyond the comprehension of shallow minds, and whose divine responses are rare in this world—seldom seen and little known—for such a person, I have much to say about the Venerable Shengbi. I recall that the Master and I once served under our late teacher on Tiger Hill. Even then, the Master's past conduct was profound, open, and free, so much so that everyone admired him as extraordinary. His selfless dedication to the Way and his painstaking efforts were not something ordinary people could match. Later, he went into seclusion on Mount Tiantai, shedding the worldly life like a cicada sheds its skin. He cultivated all the secret Dharma methods—above all, to repay the vast compassion of the ancient sages, and below, to awaken the ignorance of all living beings. With utmost sincerity, he pricked his own skin to draw blood, and with it, he hand-copied the Avatamsaka Sutra, the Lotus Sutra, the Shurangama Sutra, and all the great Mahayana sutras. He did this without a single day’s break, whether in bitter cold or sweltering heat. How can one describe the sincerity of his practice and the firmness with which he upheld the Way! When he was copying the chapter on the Ten Faiths, his meditation wisdom grew even brighter, and he doubled his diligence. Then, Heaven responded: rice rained down from the sky, lotus flowers sprouted from the earth, and at the tip of his brush, he suddenly obtained relics. These miraculous signs—rare in this world—made everyone who saw them revere and admire him. They spread the news far and wide, calling it a divine marvel. Surely, such a man must be a being of the fruit of enlightenment! The Master only hid his virtue deeper. He took the relics he had obtained and traveled to famous mountains, paying homage everywhere. In the spring of 1598, he finally came to visit me at Fuguo Temple. I begged him to let the relics be kept permanently in our temple, and I built a copper pagoda to enshrine them. But the Master sighed deeply and said, "I had intended to take them back to my home monastery. But now fate has brought them here—they cannot be moved. Then I shall sacrifice myself to seek more relics." So he went into a sealed retreat in the north of my dwelling. Day and night, he diligently bowed to the Buddha with deep reverence, and then burned his arm as an offering. He recited the Great Jewel Universal and Great Dharani that Fulfills All Wishes, vowing to find relics again by a set date. When the day came, it indeed happened as he had promised. The fourfold assembly came to witness it—like rivers flowing to the ocean. Everyone who asked the Master about his experiences exclaimed in admiration. Even the officials and scholars of Yangzhou all came to pay their respects. Ah! The Master's deeds truly revived the Way for an entire era. Yet the Master, in his compassion, still thought: Wherever relics are present, it is no different from the Buddha himself being there. Now that he had obtained such an extraordinary connection, how could he not hold Buddhist ceremonies to make it even more widely known? So he studied the ancient and modern ways and established this repentance ritual. He made the relics the central object and the sacred dharani the core practice—so that all people could diligently follow it, purify all their karma, and fulfill all their wishes. Alas! In this degenerate age, the Buddha's teachings have long been neglected. Without relying on such a powerful connection, how could they be revived? A man like the Master—he is like one who lifts a cloud from the eternal night and reveals the moon over the dark crossroads. His compassionate light shines universally, guiding sentient beings of all capacities. He spreads the wind of virtue far and wide, filling the entire universe. May those who hereafter rely on this repentance ritual to attain samadhi be able to carry on the legacy of the ancient sages, spread the Way of universal benefit—and do far more than simply move Heaven and Earth or command ghosts and spirits!
