The Sutra of the Mantra for Saving the Burning-Faced Hungry Ghosts, Spoken by the Buddha, in One Volume

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Śikṣānanda of Khotan in the Tang Dynasty.

At that time, the World-Honored One was in the city of Kapilavastu, at the Nigrodha Grove, surrounded by monks, bodhisattvas, and countless beings, and he began to teach the Dharma.

At that time, Ananda was dwelling alone in a pure place, his mind focused in contemplation. In the third watch of the night, he saw a hungry ghost named "Mianran" appear before him. The ghost said to Ananda, "In three days, your life will end, and you will be reborn among us hungry ghosts."

Hearing this, Ananda was filled with fear and distress. He asked the ghost, "What can I do to avoid this misfortune and escape such suffering?"

The hungry ghost replied, "If at dawn you can make offerings to hundreds of thousands of millions of hungry ghosts, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, as well as to hundreds of thousands of Brahmins and sages—giving each a measure of food and drink according to the Magadha standard—and also make offerings to the Three Jewels on my behalf, then your life will be extended, and I will be freed from the suffering of a hungry ghost and reborn in the heavens."

When Ananda saw this flaming-faced hungry ghost, its body emaciated and withered, extremely ugly, its face ablaze, its throat as thin as a needle, its hair tangled and wild, its nails long and sharp, its body as if bearing a heavy burden, and when he heard such ominous words, he was greatly terrified, his hair standing on end. He immediately rose from his seat, hurried to the Buddha, prostrated himself with his five limbs touching the ground, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, trembling in body and mind, and said to the Buddha: "Save me, World-Honored One! Save me, Well-Gone One! In three days, my life will come to an end. Last night, I saw a flaming-faced hungry ghost, who said to me: 'In three days, you will surely die and be reborn among the hungry ghosts.' I then asked: 'By what means can I avoid this suffering?' The hungry ghost replied: 'If you offer food and drink to hundreds of thousands of nayutas of hungry ghosts as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, and to hundreds of thousands of Brahmins and various sages, you will gain extended life.' World-Honored One, how can I now avoid this suffering?"

At that time, the World-Honored One said to Ananda, "Do not be afraid now! There is a special skillful method that will allow you to offer food to these hungry ghosts, brahmins, and ascetics. Do not worry or feel distressed."

The Buddha said to Ananda, “There is a dhāraṇī called ‘The Radiant Power of All Virtues, Immeasurable in Might.’ If someone recites this dhāraṇī, they will immediately have offered food—a full measure of Magadha measures, totaling four bushels and nine pecks—to each of the countless hungry ghosts, numbering as many as the sands of millions upon millions of Ganges Rivers, and to each of the sixty-eight million countless hundred thousand brahmins and sages.”

The Buddha said to Ananda: "In a previous life, when I was a Brahmin, I received this Dharani from Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and the Tathagata of World-Transcending Virtuous Power. Through the power of this Dharani, I was able to generously offer food to countless hungry ghosts, Brahmins, and sages. Because of these offerings to the hungry ghosts, I left this body behind and was reborn in heaven. Ananda, you should now uphold this Dharani and use it to protect yourself."

Then he spoke this mantra:

"Namo, all Tathagatas (Thus-Come Ones), who perceive the world with compassion. Homage to you all, without exception."

Buddha said, "Ananda, if you wish to perform the ritual of offering food, first take some food and place it in a clean dish. Recite this dharani (spiritual incantation) seven times over the food. Then, stand inside the doorway, extend your arm outside, place the dish on clean ground, and snap your fingers seven times.

When this offering is made, in all four directions, hundreds of thousands of millions of countless hungry ghosts—as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River—will each receive food equal to four and nine-tenths of a Magadha measure. All these ghosts will be completely satisfied. After eating this food, they will abandon their ghostly forms and all be reborn in the heavenly realms."

"Ananda, if monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen regularly recite this Dharani and offer food and drink with devotion, they will be filled with boundless merit and their lives will be extended. They will gain the merit of having made offerings to hundreds of thousands of Tathagatas. Their complexion will become radiant and fresh, their dignity and power strong, and their memory sharp. All non-human beings, ghosts, demons (Yakshas and Rakshasas), and hungry ghosts will be afraid of such people and cannot bear to look at them. Such people will have fully accomplished the great strength and diligence of effort."

"Ānanda, I tell you further: If you wish to give food to Brahmins and sages, take some food and drink, fill your bowl with it, and recite this dhāraṇī seven times over the food. Then pour it into flowing water. This act will fully offer food to countless—hundreds of thousands of koṭis, like the sands of the Ganges River—Brahmins and sages, making it like celestial food.

When those Brahmins and sages eat this food, their sense faculties will be complete, and they will be filled with blessings. Each will make a vow and praise the giver, saying: 'The person who gave this food will have a pure mind, quickly attain the majesty of the Brahma Heaven, always practice pure conduct, and fully achieve the merit of making offerings to hundreds of thousands of koṭis of Tathāgatas—as many as the sands of the Ganges River. He will always be victorious over all his enemies.'"

"If monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen wish to make offerings to the Three Jewels, they should prepare incense, flowers, and food, and recite this dhāraṇī twenty-one times over the offerings. By doing so, these good men and women will perfect both heavenly and supreme offerings, honoring and praising the Three Jewels in all Buddha lands. The Buddhas will remember, praise, and extol them, and the gods will protect them."

The Buddha said, "Go now, Ananda. Protect your own mind and body. At the same time, teach this widely to help all beings. May they be filled with infinite virtue and, in every life they are born into, encounter countless buddhas."
