宋慶曆間。歐陽文忠公修知頴州。有官妓盧媚。姿貌端秀。口中甞作蓮花香。散越滿座。有蜀僧頗知人生前事。云。此女前身甞為尼。誦法華經三十年。一念之誤。遂至於此。公問妓曰。曾讀法華經否。曰。某失身於此。所不暇也。公命取經示之。一覧輒誦。如素習者易以他經。則不能也。公於是始信修種之言不妄

> During the Qingli period of the Song Dynasty, Ouyang Xiu, known as Duke Wenzhong, was serving as the governor of Yingzhou. Among the government entertainers was a woman named Lu Mei, who was graceful and beautiful. A fragrance of lotus flowers constantly emanated from her mouth, spreading throughout the entire gathering. A monk from Sichuan, who was said to know of people's past lives, remarked, "This woman was a nun in her previous life who recited the Lotus Sutra for thirty years. But because of a single moment of misguided thought, she fell into her current circumstances." Duke Ouyang then asked the entertainer, "Have you ever read the Lotus Sutra?" She replied, "I have been trapped in this life of servitude and have never had the chance." The Duke ordered the sutra brought to her. She glanced at it and recited it fluently, as if she had practiced it all her life. When given other scriptures, however, she could not recite them. It was only then that Duke Ouyang began to believe that the words about karma and past deeds were not unfounded.
