### 明譚工部貞默母

> Ming Dynasty Ministry of Works Officer Tan Zhenmo's Mother

嚴太夫人。持家教子。俱有法度。雖夫貴子貴。而布衣蔬食。篤信佛法。尤崇重法華及金剛經。晨夕禮誦。晚歲加持華嚴。日一卷。又能為子婦講解大義。崇禎壬申。示疾。起沐浴更衣禮佛曰。我一生敬佛。果有佛緣。當令遺體不穢。因跏趺合掌而逝。時值暑月七日。顏色含笑如生。香氣時拂。喪次無一飛蠅。見者莫不歎異。

> Madam Tai, the Grand Lady, managed her household and educated her children with proper discipline. Though her husband and sons held high positions, she remained humble, wearing plain clothes and eating simple meals. She was deeply devoted to the Buddhist faith, with special reverence for the Lotus Sutra and the Diamond Sutra, reciting them in worship every morning and evening. In her later years, she also practiced the Avatamsaka Sutra, reading one chapter daily. She was also able to explain the core teachings to her daughters-in-law. In the year Renshen of the Chongzhen era, she showed signs of illness. She rose, bathed, changed clothes, and paid homage to the Buddha, saying, "Throughout my life, I have revered the Buddha. If there is truly a connection with the Buddha, may my body remain undefiled." Then, sitting in full lotus posture with palms pressed together, she passed away. It was the seventh month of summer, yet her face remained as serene as if smiling, as though still alive. A fragrant scent occasionally wafted through the air, and not a single fly appeared at the funeral gathering. All who witnessed this marveled and sighed in wonder.
