> Preface The arising and ceasing of phenomena are called delusion, which is why there are two kinds of inverted views. Extinguishing delusion is called truth, and so one gradually progresses through the saintly stages. For those cultivating samādhi, when the thirst of desire is dried up, and the sense faculties no longer pair with their objects, the grasping mind becomes empty and clear, pure wisdom itself. Yet because they have not yet merged with the stream of the Dharma, this is called dry wisdom. From this ground, one gradually passes through the saintly stages—the ten faiths, ten abodes, ten practices, and ten dedications—enhanced by the four wondrous practices. Following these traces, they support one another, advancing layer by layer. Reaching the ten grounds, one transcends the ordinary and enters the saintly, where the work of cultivation can go no further, and thus one attains equal enlightenment. As for wondrous enlightenment, it is a superior entry into the saintly domain, accomplishing the unsurpassed path. In truth, it is simply the fulfillment from beginning to end of a single initial mind of dry wisdom. However, earlier it is called dry wisdom, and later it is also called vajra. Dry wisdom means that, having already ascended the saintly stages, without this power of wisdom one cannot cut through the final subtle delusions or sweep away the shadowy traces of previous stages. Therefore, it is especially praised and called vajra to honor it. This is not to establish another stage after the latter mind of equal enlightenment.
