The Essential Meaning of the Precious Mirror Samadhi, composed by the eminent Qing dynasty monk Xingce, is a commentary and elucidation on the Chan Buddhist classic, the *Precious Mirror Samadhi*. Xingce was a representative figure of the Linji school in the early Qing period. His work integrates the essence of Chan mind Dharma with Pure Land thought, exerting a profound and lasting influence. Centered on the *Precious Mirror Samadhi*, this text analyzes the Chan sudden enlightenment approach, emphasizing the essential principles of practice: the inherent purity of mind-nature and the direct pointing to seeing one's true nature. It further combines this with the practice of Pure Land Buddha-recitation, embodying the characteristic Ming-Qing Buddhist synthesis of Chan and Pure Land cultivation. As one of the important commentaries within the Chan tradition, this book is not only a crucial document for studying Linji school thought but also provides later generations of practitioners with a practical guide integrating Chan and Pure Land. It holds significant academic and practical value in Buddhist history, serving as a link between past and future.

The "Precious Mirror Samadhi" was personally transmitted by Dongshan from Yunyan and secretly passed down to Caoshan. The masters of the Caodong lineage, fearing it might become too widely circulated, only taught it privately within their chambers to establish the core teachings and prevent misinterpretations. It was not until Zhu Shiying received it from an old monk that it began to be transmitted in the world. The text consists of three hundred and sixty words, among which phrases such as "departing from the six lines," "partial and complete," and "mutual interpenetration" serve as the pivotal points of the entire work. However, its profound meaning is hidden and difficult for ordinary minds to grasp. Occasionally, one or two venerable masters have attempted to explain its meaning, but their interpretations often become fragmented and lose the essence, thereby dishonoring the ancestors and misleading later learners. Recently, I came across the book "The Eye of Humans and Devas," which records the core teachings of the five schools, but the Caodong lineage section contains numerous errors. Is this not due to a misunderstanding of this fundamental samadhi? My friend, the lay practitioner Lütang Hu Jie, saw this and was deeply troubled, urging me to examine and correct its meaning. After his passing, I carried this task in my heart for several years. One day, at the urging of a Chan practitioner, I closed my door, lit incense, and repeatedly contemplated the remaining teachings. I realized that the essence of this samadhi is intricately revealed within the hexagram of "Double Li." Thus, I extracted its threads and composed six diagrams with explanations to illuminate it. The first diagram serves as a general overview, while the following five provide specific details. This is done to elucidate the profound subtleties, not for worldly dissemination. Whether I am praised or blamed, I have no time to consider. Having lamented the errors in ancient interpretations and not wishing to fail Lütang's trust, I have reluctantly composed this. I dare not claim that this is the true meaning of the samadhi. May those with discerning eyes judge for themselves. The six diagrams and explanations are: "Diagram and Explanation of the Precious Mirror Samadhi," "Diagram and Explanation of Partial and Complete Mutual Interpenetration," "Diagram and Explanation of the Threefold Division of Hexagrams," "Diagram and Explanation of the Five Transformations and Positions," "Diagram and Explanation of the Two Metaphors Revealing the Dharma," and "Diagram and Explanation of the Six Lines Encompassing the Meaning."
