Sutra of the Cundi Dharani, the Heart-Mother of the Seven Koṭi Buddhas
Translated by the Tripitaka Master Divākara of Tang Dynasty India.
At that time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor of the Orphans and the Solitary, near Shravasti. The World-Honored One, reflecting and contemplating out of compassion for future beings, taught the Dharani of Cundi, the Heart-Mother of the Seventy Million Buddhas. He then spoke this mantra:
Homage to all the Buddhas, the Perfectly Enlightened Ones in the ten directions, as many as atoms in the universe. Thus it is said: Om, Cleanse the defilements, Purify the hindrances, Realize the pure and bright nature, So it is!
If there are monks, nuns, male lay followers, or female lay followers who receive, uphold, recite, and study this dharani for a full eight hundred thousand times, all the grave offenses they have committed over countless eons—including the five heinous crimes—will be completely eradicated. Wherever they are reborn, they will always encounter Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. All their necessities will be fully provided, and in every lifetime, they will naturally renounce worldly life, fully uphold the pure precepts of a Bodhisattva, and always be reborn among humans or celestial beings, never falling into the lower realms. They will be constantly protected by the gods.
If lay men and women of good lineage recite and uphold this dharani, their households will not be troubled or harmed by disasters, misfortunes, or illness. All their endeavors will go smoothly, and whatever they say will be trusted and accepted by others.
If someone recites this dharani a full one hundred thousand times, in their dreams they will see Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Śrāvakas, and Pratyekabuddhas, and they will see black matter coming out of their own mouths. If they have serious offenses, after reciting a full two hundred thousand times, they will also see Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in their dreams and will again see black matter coming out of their mouths. If someone has committed the five heinous sins and does not receive such favorable dreams, they should recite an additional seventy thousand times. Then they will obtain the same signs as before. Eventually, when they dream of white matter like yogurt or rice coming out, they should know that this is the sign that their offenses have been purified.
Now, I will explain the great practices associated with this Dharani.
Before a Buddha statue, before a stupa, or in a clean place, prepare a square altar by spreading cow dung on the ground, adjusting its size as needed. Then, offer flowers, incense, banners, umbrellas, food, drink, lamps, and candles according to your ability. Recite a mantra over water and sprinkle it in all directions and above and below to create a sacred boundary. Place a vase of scented water at each corner of the altar and one in the center. The practitioner should kneel in the middle of the altar, facing east, and recite the mantra 1,008 times; then the water vases will rotate on their own.
With palms pressed together, hold mixed flowers, recite the mantra 1,008 times, and scatter them over a mirror. Then, while looking directly into the mirror, recite the mantra another 1,008 times. This practice will allow you to see the images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Recite the mantra over flowers 108 times, then scatter them as an offering. Whatever questions you ask, you will receive clear answers.
If someone is afflicted by a ghost or spirit possession, use the mantra to bless a piece of straw and gently brush the patient with it; they will be cured. If a young child is possessed by a ghost, have an unmarried girl twist five-colored thread into a cord. For each knot tied, recite the mantra once. Tie twenty-one knots and place it around the child's neck. Recite the mantra over mustard seeds seven times and scatter them on the child's face. The affliction will then be removed.
Furthermore, there is a method: Draw the patient's likeness in ink before them, then chant a mantra while striking it with a willow branch, and the illness will be cured.
Furthermore, there is a method: if a person is possessed by a ghost and is ill, even if they are far away, you should recite a spell over a willow branch seven times, then have someone take it to them and strike them with it — they will be cured.
Furthermore, there is this dharma: if you recite this mantra while traveling on the road, you will have no fear of thieves, robbers, wild animals, or the like.
Moreover, there is a practice: if you constantly uphold this mantra, you will prevail in any dispute or legal conflict. If you need to cross rivers, lakes, or seas, recite the mantra while crossing, and you will face no dangers from vicious aquatic creatures or other obstacles in the water.
Furthermore, there is a method. If a country suffers from unseasonable droughts or floods, or if a plague spreads, one should mix ghee with sesame seeds and rice. Using three fingers, take a pinch of it, recite the mantra once, and cast it into the fire. This should be done continuously for seven days and seven nights, repeating the process at all six periods of the day. Every calamity and epidemic will then be completely eliminated.
Furthermore, there is a practice to be performed on a sandy riverbank or sandbar. Using a seal or stamp, press the sand to form the shape of a pagoda. Recite the mantra once for each pagoda formed, continuing until you have done this six hundred thousand times. Through this practice, you may behold Guanyin Bodhisattva, Tara Bodhisattva, or Vajra-Ruler Bodhisattva. Whatever you sincerely wish for will be fulfilled. You may also be granted the elixir of immortality, or receive a prophecy of your future Enlightenment.
"Furthermore, there is a practice: circumambulate an image of the Bodhi Tree to the right while reciting a mantra one million times. You will then behold the Bodhisattva, who will teach the Dharma to you. If you wish to follow the Bodhisattva, you will be able to do so immediately."
Furthermore, there is a practice: if you constantly recite this mantra while begging for alms, you will not be harmed by vicious people or aggressive dogs. If you recite this mantra 300,000 times before a stupa, a Buddha image, or a reliquary, and then on the full moon day of the bright fortnight make a great offering, abstain from food for a full day and night while reciting the mantra with focused intention, you will at last see the Vajra Holder Bodhisattva. That Bodhisattva will then take this person to his own celestial palace.
