Preface to the Reprint of the Esoteric Text on the Practice and Repentance for the Accomplishment of the Buddha-Mother Cundi

The Bodhisattva Cundi, with her majestic and divine virtue, rescues and ferries the multitudes of the deluded. She widely proclaims the Heart Mantra, enabling those with dull faculties and stubborn natures to attain the fearless power of samadhi, to subdue demonic adversaries, and to directly perceive their original nature. This is far more than just a single expedient means displaying great spiritual powers merely to bestow blessings upon beings. Yet, the blessings received are truly immeasurable.

My late father, the Duke Xiangyi, upheld her practice from childhood with an unwavering mind. Because of this, he rose from commoner status to achieve high honors. During the Tumu Crisis, he escorted the imperial carriage northward on the hunt, emerging from a hundred brushes with death and traversing ten thousand miles of peril. Thereafter, he deeply received imperial favor, donned embroidered robes, wielded the commander's axe, pacified bandit rebellions, and brought peace to both the civilized and border regions. Although his utmost loyalty was innate to his character, at every moment of hardship and danger, the evident protection and aid he received were clearly bestowed.

Our family's official honors accumulated over generations, each marked by auspicious signs. My late father, the Lord of Lanzhai, devotedly upheld this practice his entire life. He had a ritual manual for Cundi printed and commissioned the casting and distribution of one hundred and eight precious Cundi mirrors. He rose to the highest official rank, once falling into water without getting wet, and encountering bandits who fled at his approach.

I, too, have reverently followed and upheld this practice without negligence. Early on, I passed the examinations and soared high. By my father's command, I inherited his post and, undeservedly, received the imperial grace of a hereditary military commission. On Renzi Day in the year Jiashen, I dreamed of mountain rocks collapsing and flying, with nowhere to hide. I heard a voice in the air say, "Simply uphold my mantra, and your calamity can be avoided." On the nineteenth day of the third month, the rebel bandits breached the capital. I led my household retainers in street fighting. A spear was thrust at my chest, yet it did not pierce me. I fled south on foot, repeatedly encountering violence that could not harm me.

Later, I was appointed to a military farming post and served as deputy supervisor to the Marquis of Ningnan's army. While crossing Dongting Lake, a hurricane arose, and our boat nearly capsized, yet we did not perish. Reflecting that my person was insignificant and my blessings meager, yet the Bodhisattva, out of compassion, provided aid in so many forms, I thus made a vow: to universally share this with all sentient beings, that they may ascend to that Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Afterwards, Lord Zhang Wanzhen and Lord Chen Tianzhang successively served as Governor-General of Zhejiang and Fujian. Relying on the Bodhisattva's benevolent power, they enlightened and guided me from within their staff, enabling the preservation of tens of thousands of lives. Both gentlemen submitted memorials crediting my merit, and I was appointed Vice Prefect of Zhangzhou, entrusted with its pacification and governance.

By the year Renchen, my term had just ended and I had departed. Three days later, Zhangzhou was besieged, and I escaped the disaster. From this we can see, the merit of upholding the mantra—how could it be shallow or slight?

Earlier, when I first entered Fujian, I paid respects to the monk Yinkong at Guangji Temple. There I saw the *Cundi Practice and Siddhi Precious Repentance*, along with paintings of the various Dharma-protecting deities. It was something I had never encountered before. Inquiring about its origins revealed an extraordinary story.

At the beginning of our dynasty, there was a Daoist practitioner named Xia, a weaver by trade. Each night, his heart was filled with fear. An old monk appeared, teaching him a mantra and repentance, saying, "Upholding this will remove your fear and enable you to attain liberation." One day while weaving, his shuttle fell to the ground but returned to his hand. This happened repeatedly. Suddenly, the various altar generals manifested. He bowed and asked them. They told him, "Your mind is sincere. The Great Sage has commanded us to protect you." He then hung up a mirror, prayed earnestly, summoned a painter, and successively copied the images that appeared within the mirror. This is how this repentance method began.

Later, the Daoist practitioner Xia passed away in seated meditation. His physical body was preserved and venerated in Fuzhou. I went to pay my respects and was able to request a copy of the repentance text and the images to bring back. This, too, was a rare occurrence.

Now, as long as emotional attachments remain unsevered, every action creates transgression. To realize Bodhi, one must first eliminate past karmic obstructions. Therefore, understand that seeking blessings itself can become a source of transgression. Only through repentance can one truly receive the reward of blessings. Fundamentally, when the innate awareness shines forth, it inherently possesses spiritual powers. Blazing fire can transform into a blue lotus; the sea of suffering can change into sweet dew. Thus, the Bodhisattva Cundi and all the Dharma-protecting deities are actually the manifestations of one's own mind. The blessings received—how could they be limited?

Therefore, I have commissioned the carving of the blocks to print this, that it may spread throughout the world. My wish is that those who uphold the mantra and practice the repentance will simply and directly accept and undertake it.

In the summer of the Ren-Chen year, disciple of the Three Teachings, Xiang Qian, with the Dharma name Hong Ci, washes his hands, lights incense, and respectfully composes this preface.
