Entering the Marketplace, Extending a Hand: Preface
The rustic gate is closed, shut all alone. Even the sages have no idea. Buried is one's own inner radiance. Betrayed are the footsteps of those who came before.
Carrying a gourd, entering the marketplace. Leaning on a staff, returning home. In wine shops and fish markets, guiding people to become Buddhas.
The verse says:
Bare-chested and barefoot, he comes in; Smeared with mud and ash, his smile fills his cheeks. No need for immortals' true secret formulas— He simply makes dead wood burst into bloom.
和。
Harmony.
A man from a foreign land draws near, With a horse's face and a donkey's jaw. He swings his iron staff swift as the wind, And every door flies open, a thousand households through.
又。
And again,
A golden hammer hidden in the sleeve strikes straight at your face; Foreign words and Chinese speech, a face full of laughter. If, meeting, you understand yet do not recognize each other, The tower's gates and courtyard open wide in the shape of eight.
