### 釋法橋

> Shi Faqiao

法橋者。中山人。少樂轉讀。而乏聲。每以不暢為慨。於是絕粒懺悔。七日七夕稽首觀音。以祈現報。同學苦諫。誓而不改。至第七日。覺㗋內豁然。即索水洗潄。云。吾有應矣。於是作三契經。聲徹里許。遠近驚嗟。悉來觀聽。爾後誦經數十萬言。晝夜諷詠。哀婉通神。至年九十。聲猶不變。

> Faqiao was from Zhongshan. As a young man, he loved to chant the scriptures, but he had a weak voice. He was always grieved that his chanting did not flow well. So he gave up eating and repented. For seven days and seven nights he bowed to Guanyin, praying for an immediate response. His fellow students strongly urged him to stop, but he vowed to continue and would not change his mind. On the seventh day, he felt a sudden openness in his throat. He immediately called for water to wash and rinse his mouth, saying, "My prayer has been answered." He then composed three sections of sutra chanting, and his voice carried for more than a li. People near and far were astonished and sighed in admiration, and all came to watch and listen. After that, he recited hundreds of thousands of words of scripture, chanting day and night. His voice was so moving and mournful that it seemed to reach the spirits. By the time he reached ninety years of age, his voice was still unchanged.
