### 釋義寂

> Definition of Right Livelihood

義寂法師。字常照。姓胡氏。溫州永嘉人也。講諸經論。并造疏註。寓四明育王寺。夢登國清寺。上方有寶莊嚴幢座。題曰文殊臺。設枑梐闌隔。求入無由。俄覩觀音菩薩。從堂徐出。相接斯須。覺己與觀音身泯合不分。因而驚寤。自是之來。樂說無盡矣。或曰。入普門智。乘利物悲。上合佛覺。證無上故。下合眾生。凡聖同體故。得是心者。非觀音而誰歟。

> Master Yiji, whose courtesy name was Changzhao and family name Hu, was a native of Yongjia in Wenzhou. He lectured on various sutras and commentaries, and also wrote annotations and sub-commentaries. While residing at Ayuwang Temple in Siming, he dreamed of ascending to Guoqing Temple, where above there was a jeweled and majestic seat adorned with ornaments, inscribed with the words "Manjushri Terrace," surrounded by railings and barriers that prevented him from entering. Suddenly he saw Guanyin Bodhisattva emerge slowly from the hall and approach him for a moment. He then felt himself merge indistinguishably with Guanyin's body, and was startled awake. From that time onward, his joy in expounding the Dharma became inexhaustible. Some say: "Entering the wisdom of the universal gateway, carrying the compassion that benefits all beings—above, uniting with the Buddha's enlightenment, realizing the unsurpassed; below, uniting with all sentient beings, as ordinary and enlightened share the same essence. Who but Guanyin could attain such a mind?"
