The Sutra of Shanzi Spoken by the Buddha, translated by the eminent monk Shengjian during the Later Qin dynasty, is one of the important scriptures in Chinese Buddhism. This sutra recounts how the Bodhisattva Shanzi, in a past life during his practice, cut his own flesh to prepare medicine in order to save his mother from illness, demonstrating great filial piety and compassion. Through the story of Shanzi, the sutra elucidates the Buddhist teachings on filial devotion and the bodhisattva’s altruistic vows, emphasizing that practitioners should cultivate a mind of compassion and gratitude. As a Mahayana Buddhist scripture, it has been widely circulated in China and has profoundly influenced the development of Buddhist ethical thought. It is often used to explain the Buddhist perspective on filial piety and the spirit of the bodhisattva path. Shengjian’s translation is characterized by its simple language and clear exposition of principles, making it an important text for the study of early Chinese Buddhist thought.

The Sutra of Shanzi Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Shi Shengjian of the Later Qin Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was in the country of Viraka, accompanied by twelve hundred and fifty bhikkhus, along with countless bodhisattvas, kings, ministers, elders, householders, devout men and women—all gathered together at that time.

The Buddha addressed the assembly of monks: "All of you, settle your minds and listen carefully! In my previous life, when I first attained the path of the Bodhisattva, my moral conduct was universally complete. With utmost diligence and single-minded focus, I cultivated and gathered wisdom, skillfully employing expedient means. The merit and virtue I accumulated are beyond measure—no heavenly beings, dragons, spirits, kings, or ordinary people could match it."

Ananda heard the Buddha’s words, straightened his robes, knelt with his palms together, and said to the Buddha: "I wish to hear the teaching."

The Buddha said to Ananda, "In the distant past, countless ages ago, there was a Bodhisattva named Universal Great Conduct. With kindness and compassion, he gave generously to help all living beings. He always practiced the four boundless qualities—loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity—to rescue beings from danger and nurture those who were suffering. While living in the Heaven of Joy, he taught the celestial beings. Day and night, he entered deep meditation three times each period, clearing his mind and reflecting through inner vision. He gazed upon the Ten Directions of the world to see the good and evil paths people were walking. He knew that some honored parents and children, cared for their mothers and fathers, served the Three Jewels, respected teachers and elders, and cultivated good karma. With his divine eye, he constantly observed across the five realms of existence.

Once, in the land of Kāśī, there lived an elder who had no children. He and his wife were both blind. In their hearts, they wished to enter the mountains to seek the supreme path of liberation, to cultivate a pure mind, and to find joy in stillness. The Bodhisattva thought: "These people have set their minds on learning the wondrous path, yet both are blind and cannot see. If they enter the mountains, they might fall into a pit or ravine, or encounter a poisonous creature and be harmed. When my present life ends, I will be reborn as their son to support them for the rest of their natural years." Then, when the Bodhisattva's life came to an end, he was born into that blind couple's home as their son. The parents were overjoyed and loved him dearly. Though they had originally resolved to pursue the path and enter the mountains, after having this child, they became attached to worldly life.

At the age of ten, he was known as Shanzi. He was deeply filial, kind, and compassionate, practicing the Ten Good Deeds: refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, deception, drinking alcohol, false speech, frivolous talk, and jealousy; having unwavering faith in the Way; diligently advancing day and night; serving his parents as one serves Heaven; always speaking with a gentle smile, never hurting others' feelings; and acting in accordance with what is right, never leaning toward wrongdoing. Seeing this, his parents were filled with great joy and no longer had any worries or sorrow.

When Shāṅ became ten years old, he knelt before his parents and said: "I originally made a great vow to enter the deep mountains, seeking the path of stillness and ultimate wisdom. How could I abandon this original intention for the sake of having a child? Life in this world is impermanent and ever-changing; one’s life is not as durable as metal or stone, and death may come at any moment. Please allow me to fulfill my original wish and follow my earlier resolve. I will accompany you both into the mountains to care for you, doing so without delay."

His parents replied: "Heaven itself knows your filial devotion. We will not break our original vow. We shall enter the mountains together." Thereupon, Shāṅ gave away all the family's possessions to the poor throughout the kingdom, and together with his parents, they entered the mountains.
