The Sutra of the Eight Buddhas’ Names Spoken by the Buddha Translated during the Yuan-Wei period by the scripture translator Gautama Prajñāruci, this sutra is one of the important early Chinese Buddhist scriptures. It is included in the Collected Division of the Taishō Tripiṭaka and primarily expounds the names and merits of eight Buddhas, emphasizing the practice of reciting Buddha-names to eliminate karmic obstacles and accumulate blessings and wisdom. The sutra reflects the Mahāyāna Buddhist reverence for multi-Buddha faith and highlights the Dharma-gate of Buddha-name recitation. As a renowned translator of the Northern Wei dynasty, Gautama Prajñāruci produced a translation that is concise in language and faithful to the original teachings. This sutra provides valuable textual material for the study of Buddhist thought during the Northern and Southern Dynasties and the practice of Buddha-recitation, holding significant reference value in the formation of Pure Land faith within Chinese Buddhism.

Sutra on the Eight Buddhas Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Gautama Prajnāruci, an Indian Brahmin of the Yuan Wei Dynasty

This is what I heard:

Once, the Buddha was traveling in the garden of the Nagi women in Vaishali, together with a great assembly of bhikkhus—one thousand two hundred and fifty in number—and countless bodhisattvas.

At that time, there was a wealthy elder's son named Shan Zuo (Virtuous Action) who came out from the city. He went to the Mango Maidens' Garden and arrived where the World-Honored One was. He bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, then stepped back and stood to one side. With palms together, he addressed the Buddha: "I wish to ask a question. Please, Great Sage, allow me to speak, and then I will dare to present my inquiry."

The Buddha told Shanzuo, "Ask whatever you wish, and the Tathagata will explain it thoroughly for you."

The listener, skilled in virtuous conduct, then addressed the Buddha, saying: "O Heavenly One, are there Buddhas who, through spiritual practice and their original vows, have attained perfect Enlightenment and now teach the Dharma in the present world? Great Sage, please proclaim the names of these Buddhas. Hearing them, I will hold them fast, carry them atop my head, receive their teachings, bow in reverence, and proclaim their merits. By this, I will be free from all difficulties and will not fall into the three lower realms. Hearing the Buddhas' names, humans and non-humans will not seize their chance against me. Should I stand before officials, reciting the Buddhas' names will ensure none can wrongfully oppress me or take what is mine. I will be strong in character, without fear or weakness, and peacefully gain victory. When entering battle, swords will not harm my body, arrows will not pierce me, and no yakshas, ghosts, heavenly dragons, or spirits will dare to trouble me. Lions, tigers, wolves, wild beasts, and poisonous creatures will be unable to harm me."

The Buddha said to Shanzuo, "Listen carefully and reflect on this well! I will teach you how to protect yourself from dangers and find peace without fear." Then Shanzuo, accepting the instruction, listened attentively.

The Buddha said: "To the east, there is a Buddha named Fēng Chì Chéng Tathāgata, the Thus Come One, the Truthful One, the Fully Enlightened One. He is now present in the world, teaching the Dharma in a land called 'Famous Footprints.'"

Furthermore, in the eastern direction, there is a Buddha called the Tathagata of Steadfast Progress and Auspicious Meaning, the True One, the Fully Enlightened One, who is presently expounding the Dharma. His world is named Unsurpassable.

Furthermore, to the east of this Buddha-land, there is a Buddha called the Tathāgata Guanming Gongxun, the True One, the Fully Enlightened One, who is now expounding the Dharma in a world named Ji'an.

Furthermore, to the east of this Buddha land, there is a Buddha named Kind Excellence, Calm and Silent Chief Tathāgata, the True One, the Fully Enlightened One. He is presently teaching the Dharma in a world called Without Hatred or Resentment.

Furthermore, to the east of this Buddha land, there is a Buddha named Remembering Living Beings and Praised as Foremost Thus Come One, the True One, the Fully Enlightened One. He is presently teaching the Dharma in his world, which is called Blazing Foremost.

Furthermore, to the east of this Buddha land, there is a Buddha named Superior Shame-Dispelling Supreme Leader Tathagata, Arhat, Fully Enlightened One, who is currently teaching the Dharma in a world called Delight.
