### 中天竺

> Central India

○瞻波國。西南山石㵎中。有修羅窟。有人因遊山修道。遇此窟。人遂入中。見有修羅宮殿處。妙精華卉。乍類天宮。園池林果。不可盡述。阿修羅眾。既見斯人。希來到此。語云。汝能久住此否。答云。欲還本處。修羅既見不在。遂施一桃。與彼食訖。修羅語言。汝宜急出。恐汝身大。窟不能容。言訖走出。身遂增長。形貌麤大。頭纔出。身大孔塞。遂不出盡。自爾以來。年向數百。唯有大頭。如三碩甕。人見共語。具說此緣。人愍語云。我等鑿石令汝身出。其事云何。答云。恩澤。人奏國王。具述此意。君臣共議。此非凡人。力敵千夫。若鑿令出。儻有不測之意。誰能抗之。因此依舊。時人號為大頭仙人。唐國使人王玄䇿。已三度至彼。以手摩頭。共語了了分明。近有山內。野火燒頭焦黑。命猶不死。西國志六十卷。國家修撰。奉敕令諸學士畫圖。集在中臺。復有四十卷。從麟德三年起首。至乾封元年夏末方訖。臨。見玄䇿。具述此事出西國志。

> In the country of Campā, within a rocky gorge in the southwestern mountains, there was a cave of the Asuras. A man once went into the mountains to cultivate the Way and, while wandering, stumbled upon this cave. He entered and found palaces of the Asuras, adorned with exquisite flowers and plants, almost resembling celestial abodes. The gardens, ponds, and orchards were beyond description. The Asuras, upon seeing this rare human visitor, said to him, "Can you stay here long?" He replied, "I wish to return to my own place." Seeing that he would not remain, they offered him a peach, which he ate. Then the Asuras said, "You must leave quickly, lest your body grow too large for the cave to contain." As soon as he stepped out, his body began to swell, becoming coarse and massive. By the time his head emerged, his body had grown so large that it blocked the opening, and he could not fully exit. Since then, hundreds of years have passed, and only his enormous head remains, as large as a three-bushel jar. People who came to speak with him heard his full story. Moved by compassion, they said, "We could carve away the rock and let your body out—what do you think?" He replied, "That would be a great kindness." They reported this to the king, who discussed it with his ministers. They concluded, "This is no ordinary man; his strength rivals a thousand. If we carve him out, and he harbors ill intentions, who could oppose him?" And so they left him as he was. People of the time called him the Great-Headed Immortal. Wang Xuance, an envoy of the Tang Dynasty, visited him three times, touching his head and conversing with him clearly. Recently, a wildfire in the mountains scorched his head black, yet he still lives. The \*Chronicles of the Western Lands\*, in sixty volumes, was compiled by the state. By imperial decree, scholars were ordered to illustrate it, and the collection was housed in the central pavilion. An additional forty volumes were completed from the third year of Linde to the end of summer in the first year of Qianfeng. Lin, who met with Xuance, reported this matter in full <note>from the Chronicles of the Western Lands</note>.

問曰。阿修羅道。人何少耶。答曰。其生修羅道者無報。故人不得而知之。觀上經文。即自知不少矣。
