> A monk named Daochang of the White Pagoda Temple was in charge of the monks' communal property. He freely took and used it for himself. Suddenly several underworld officials appeared in his room in broad daylight, dragged him to the ground, and were about to cut off his head. Daochang cried out in terror, begging for his life. The official said in a stern voice, "Return all the wealth of this room to the monks. Then we will let you live." Daochang kowtowed and said, "I dare not disobey." He immediately rang the bell to gather the monks, gave away all his clothing, had images made, and held a vegetarian feast. Three days later the underworld officials came again. Seeing that Daochang had only a single bowl and a single robe, they left without a word. From then on, Daochang urged himself on in practice, and in the end became renowned for his clear understanding and conduct.
