> Emperor Wuzong of Tang, son of Emperor Muzong, abolished Buddhism, took alchemical elixirs, and received Taoist talismans. The elixir caused an abscess on his back, leaving him restless and delirious. For ten days he could not speak, and then he died at the age of thirty-four, having reigned for six years. According to the \*Record of Retribution\*: On the fifteenth day of the first month, someone walking at night arrived at Emperor Muzong's tomb. Suddenly he heard voices and, thinking it was horse thieves, hid among the withered brush. Soon, a figure in red robes holding a ceremonial tablet appeared in the air and announced, "Where is the tomb keeper?" Two officials emerged and replied, "Here." The red-robed figure asked, "Has the envoy come to record the soul of the Lord of the Western Sea?" The officials replied, "By our calculations, he will arrive in eighteen days." The red-robed figure asked why it was delayed, and the officials answered, "Li Yan (Emperor Wuzong) destroyed Buddhism, so his lifespan has been cut short and his throne taken away. He is to be recorded alongside the Lord of the Western Sea, and their souls will arrive together." At that moment, a merchant's bell sounded from the east, and the red-robed figure and the two officials vanished. A few days later, Emperor Wuzong indeed passed away. <note>From the \*Comprehensive Record\*. Chancellor Li Yan, styled Dezhi, assisted Emperor Wuzong in destroying Buddhism. Later he was demoted to the position of administrator of Yazhou, where he died of a severe illness. For details, see the \*Complete Chronicle\* and the \*Extensive Records of the Taiping Era\*.</note>
