On the fifteenth day of the first month in the fourteenth year of the Zhenguan era, Master Chang of Gantong Temple had a dream. He dreamed that the King of the Underworld invited Master Leng to expound the Three Treatises, and Master Chang to explain the Lotus Sutra. He sought Master Leng's opinion on whether this was appropriate. Master Leng replied, "Excellent. Huileng has made a vow to dwell constantly in the underworld, teaching sentient beings and expounding the Mahayana scriptures. Since this sign has appeared, that vow is now fulfilled." Near the end of the ninth month, Prince Jiang noticed Master Leng's weakening condition and sent him some Shaozhou stalactite medicine, urging him to take it. That night, Master Leng dreamed of a man in formal attire who said, "Do not take this medicine. The King of the Underworld has already completed his adorned Dharma platform and has a great abundance of milk-based medicines." By the twilight of the fifteenth day of the tenth month, Master Leng felt his condition had turned for the worse. He told the monastery superintendent Baodu, "I recall that at age eight, I went to Longquan Temple to pay homage to Guanyin. Before reaching Vulture Peak, I had already expounded the sutras three times, as vivid as if it were before my eyes." Before he finished speaking, a loud voice from outside announced, "Master, rise early and light incense, for the envoy has arrived." Baodu asked, "Who is this?" The voice replied, "I am the envoy of the King of the Underworld, here to welcome Master Leng." Master Leng immediately rose, lit incense, bathed, repented, and paid homage to the Buddha. Returning to his room, he retrieved his personal annotated manuscripts on the scriptural teachings and burned them, saying, "These private notes, when read by others, would fail to grasp their true meaning."
