> During the Zhenguan era, Wei Qingzhi, the Chief Secretary of the Prince of Wei's household, had a daughter who died young. He and his wife were heartbroken over her loss. Two years later, Qingzhi was preparing a feast for relatives and guests. His family had bought a sheep but had not yet slaughtered it. That night, Qingzhi's wife dreamed of her deceased daughter, wearing a blue skirt and a white blouse, with a pair of jade hairpins in her hair—the very clothes she had worn in life. The daughter came before her mother, weeping, and said: "In the past, I secretly used household goods without telling my parents. For that karma, I am now reborn in a sheep's body, to repay my parents with my life. Tomorrow morning I will be killed. I am the one with the blue fleece and white head. I beg you, in your mercy, to spare my life." Her mother woke with a start. At dawn, she went to look at the sheep herself. There was indeed a blue sheep with a white neck and shoulders, and two white spots on its head shaped just like jade hairpins. The mother wept bitterly over it and stopped the family from killing it, waiting for Qingzhi to return so she could set it free. Soon Qingzhi came home and urged the meal to be served. The cook told him that his wife would not allow the blue sheep to be slaughtered. Angered, he ordered it killed at once. The butcher hung the sheep up to slaughter it. Several guests had already arrived—and they saw a young woman hanging there, of dignified appearance, who pleaded with them: "I am the daughter of Chief Secretary Wei. Please save my life." The guests were astonished and stopped the butcher. But the butcher feared Qingzhi's anger, and all he saw was a sheep bleating. So he killed it. Afterward, the guests sat down but would not eat. Qingzhi found it strange and asked why. The guests told him everything. Qingzhi was overcome with grief and fell ill, and never rose from his bed again. Many people in the capital knew of this matter. It was told in full to me by Cui Dunli, President of the Ministry of rites.
