### 遂州

> Suizhou

○趙文信。貞觀元年。暴死三日後還甦。即自說云。初死之日。被人遮擁驅逐將行。同伴十人。並共相隨。至閻羅王所。其中見有一僧。王先喚僧問云。師一生已來。修何功德。答云。貧道從生已來。惟誦金剛般若。王聞此語。忽即驚起。合掌讚言。善哉善哉。師審誦般若。當得昇天出世。何因錯來至此。王言未訖。忽有天童來下。引師上天去。王後喚文信前。汝從生已來。修何功德。報言。臣一生已來。不修功德。惟好庾信文章集錄。王曰。其庾信者。是大罪人。現此受苦。汝見庾信。頗曾識否。報云。雖讀渠文章。然不識其人。王即遣人引出庾信令示之。乃見一龜。身一。頭多。龜去少時。現一人來語云。我是庾信。為生時好作文章。妄引佛經。糅雜俗書。誹謗佛法。謂言不及孔老之教。今受罪報。龜身苦之極也。文信活已。具向親說。遂州之地。人多好獵。採捕蟲魚。遠近聞者。共相鑒戒。永斷殺業。各發誠心。受持般若。迄今不絕。

> Zhao Wenxin, during the first year of the Zhenguan era, died suddenly and returned to life three days later. He then told his story himself, saying: "On the day I died, I was seized and driven forward by a group of people. There were ten companions with me, all following along. We arrived at the court of King Yama. Among us, there was a monk. The King first summoned the monk and asked, 'Master, throughout your life, what merits have you cultivated?' The monk replied, 'This humble one, from birth to now, has only recited the Diamond Sutra.' Upon hearing this, the King suddenly rose in surprise, joined his palms, and praised, 'Excellent, excellent! If you have truly recited the Diamond Sutra, you should ascend to heaven and transcend the world. Why have you mistakenly come here?' Before the King finished speaking, a heavenly youth descended, led the monk away to heaven. Then the King summoned Wenxin forward and said, 'You, throughout your life, what merits have you cultivated?' Wenxin replied, 'This humble one, from birth to now, has cultivated no merits. I have only taken pleasure in the collected writings of Yu Xin.' The King said, 'That Yu Xin is a great sinner, currently suffering torment here. Do you recognize Yu Xin if you see him?' Wenxin replied, 'Although I have read his writings, I do not know the man personally.' The King then ordered someone to bring Yu Xin out to show him. He saw a turtle with one body but many heads. After the turtle had been gone for a short while, a person appeared and spoke to him, saying, 'I am Yu Xin. Because in life I was fond of writing, improperly quoting Buddhist scriptures, mixing them with secular texts, and slandering the Buddha's teachings, saying they were inferior to the doctrines of Confucius and Laozi, I now suffer this retribution. The torment of the turtle's body is extremely painful.' After Wenxin returned to life, he told everything to his relatives. In the region of Suizhou, many people were fond of hunting and catching insects and fish. When those near and far heard this story, they all took it as a warning and lesson together, permanently abandoning the killing of living beings. Each made sincere vows to uphold and recite the Diamond Sutra, and this practice continues to this day without ceasing.
