> Middle Length Discourses, The Connected Discourses on Action, Galama Sutra 6<note>First day's recitation</note>

> Thus have I heard:

> Once, the Buddha traveled to the Kalandaka Garden, accompanied by a large community of monks. He arrived at the town of Kesaputta and stayed in the Sāma Grove to the north of the town.

> At that time, the people of Kesaputta heard that the wandering ascetic Gotama, a son of the Sakyans who had left his clan and family to pursue the homeless life, had arrived in their town with a large community of monks and was staying in the Sala Grove north of Kesaputta. They heard: "That ascetic Gotama has great renown, spread in all ten directions. He is the Thus-gone One, the Worthy One, the Fully Awakened One, perfect in knowledge and conduct, the Well-gone One, knower of the worlds, unsurpassed guide for those who need training, teacher of gods and humans—called the Buddha, the Blessed One. Having realized and directly known this world with its gods, Māras, and Brahmās, its ascetics and brahmins, from gods to humans, he makes it known to others. When he teaches the Dhamma, it is excellent in the beginning, excellent in the middle, and excellent in the end—meaningful, well-phrased, complete and pure, revealing the holy life. Seeing such a Thus-gone One, Worthy One, Fully Awakened One, and offering him respect, veneration, and service, would indeed bring great benefit. Let us go and see the ascetic Gotama, and pay him our respects."

> When the people of Kesaputta heard this, each of them, together with their families and followers, gathered and set out from Kesaputta, heading north to the Sīsapā Grove, wishing to see the Blessed One, to pay their respects and make offerings. Upon arriving where the Buddha was, some of the Kesaputtans bowed at his feet and sat to one side; some exchanged greetings with him and sat to one side; some saluted him with joined palms and sat to one side; and some, upon seeing the Buddha from a distance, sat down in silence. When all had taken their seats, the Buddha taught them the Dharma, inspiring in them aspiration and delight. Through countless skillful means, he spoke to them, stirring their longing and filling them with joy. Then he became silent.

> Then the people of Kesaputta, after the Buddha had taught them the Dharma, inspiring them and filling them with joy, rose from their seats, arranged their robes over one shoulder, and with palms together, bowed to the World-Honored One and said: "Gotama, there are ascetics and brahmins who come to Kesaputta. Each praises only what they themselves know and see, while condemning what others know and see. Gotama, another ascetic or brahmin comes to Kesaputta, and likewise praises only what they know and see, while condemning what others know and see. Gotama, when we hear this, doubt arises in us: 'Among these ascetics and brahmins, who speaks the truth, and who speaks falsely?'"

> The Buddha said to them: “Kālāmas, do not give rise to doubt. Why? Because when doubt arises, hesitation follows. Kālāmas, you do not yet have pure wisdom to know whether there is a life after death or not. Nor do you have pure wisdom to know whether deeds bear consequences or not. “Kālāmas, you should know that there are three kinds of deeds that arise from causes and conditions. What are the three? Kālāmas, they are greed, anger, and delusion—these are the deeds that arise from causes and conditions. “Kālāmas, when a person is overcome by greed, their mind is never satisfied. They may kill living beings, take what is not given, engage in sexual misconduct, tell lies, or drink alcohol. “Kālāmas, when a person is overcome by anger, their mind is never satisfied. They may kill living beings, take what is not given, engage in sexual misconduct, tell lies, or drink alcohol. “Kālāmas, when a person is overcome by delusion, their mind is never satisfied. They may kill living beings, take what is not given, engage in sexual misconduct, tell lies, or drink alcohol.”

> "Kālāmas! A learned noble disciple refrains from killing, abandons killing, sets aside rods and weapons, possesses a sense of shame and moral dread, has a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, and benefits all beings, even down to insects and creeping things. Thus, they purify their mind of killing. Kālāmas! A learned noble disciple refrains from taking what is not given, abandons taking what is not given, accepts only what is offered, delights in giving, is always fond of generosity, is joyful and free from stinginess, and does not expect any reward. Thus, they purify their mind of taking what is not given. Kālāmas! A learned noble disciple refrains from unchastity, abandons unchastity, diligently cultivates a life of purity, practices it with vigor and excellence, is clean and undefiled, and gives up desire and lust. Thus, they purify their mind of unchastity. Kālāmas! A learned noble disciple refrains from false speech, abandons false speech, speaks truthfully, delights in truth, abides in truth without wavering, is trustworthy in all things, and does not deceive the world. Thus, they purify their mind of false speech."

> "Kālāmas! A well-instructed noble disciple abstains from divisive speech, abandoning it. They do not speak divisively, do not break others apart, do not repeat what they heard here to cause division there, nor what they heard there to cause division here. They unite those who are divided, and rejoice in harmony. They do not form factions, do not delight in factions, and do not praise factions. Thus they purify their minds of divisive speech. Kālāmas! A well-instructed noble disciple abstains from harsh speech, abandoning it. Whatever they say is gentle, pleasant, and heartwarming, bringing joy and comfort to others. Their words are clear and unhurried, not frightening, and help others find peace and concentration. They avoid rude, jarring, or hostile language that troubles others and disturbs their focus. Thus they purify their minds of harsh speech. Kālāmas! A well-instructed noble disciple abstains from idle chatter, abandoning it. They speak at the right time, truthfully, in accordance with the Dharma, and with meaningful purpose. Their words are calming, and they delight in words that bring peace. Their speech is timely, practical, and suited to the occasion, offering good guidance and gentle correction. Thus they purify their minds of idle chatter. Kālāmas! A well-instructed noble disciple abstains from covetousness, abandoning it. They do not harbor jealousy or longing for others' possessions or worldly goods, nor do they wish, 'May these be mine.' Thus they purify their minds of covetousness.

> "Kālāma! A well-learned noble disciple abandons ill will and cuts off ill will. They possess a sense of shame and conscience, have a compassionate heart, and wish to benefit all beings, even down to the smallest insects. Thus, they purify their mind of jealousy and ill will. Kālāma! A well-learned noble disciple abandons wrong view and cuts off wrong view. They practice right view without distortion, seeing and speaking thus: 'There is giving, there is offering, and there are words of blessing. There are results of good and bad deeds. There is this world and the next world. There are fathers and mothers. There are truly awakened people in the world who reach good destinations, who go well and live well, who directly know, directly realize, and directly witness this world and the next world through their own effort.' Thus, they purify their mind of wrong view."

> "Thus, Kālāmas! A noble disciple who has heard much, accomplished in pure bodily action, accomplished in pure verbal and mental action, free from anger and conflict, having abandoned drowsiness, without arrogance or conceit, having cut off doubt, transcended pride, possessed of right mindfulness and right wisdom, free from ignorance—dwells suffusing one direction with a mind joined with loving-kindness. Likewise the second, third, and fourth directions, above, below, and across, everywhere entirely, with a mind joined with loving-kindness, free from knots, free from ill will, free from anger and conflict, vast, great, immeasurable, well-cultivated, dwells suffusing the entire world. So too with compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity—free from knots, free from ill will, free from anger and conflict, vast, great, immeasurable, well-cultivated, dwells suffusing the entire world."

> "Thus, Kālāmas! A noble disciple who has learned much, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from ill will and conflict, attains four abodes of peace. What are the four? There is this world and the next; there are results of good and evil deeds. Obtaining this Right View, I undertake and uphold it fully; at the dissolution of the body, after death, I will surely go to a good destination, even being born in heaven. Thus, Kālāmas! A noble disciple who has learned much, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from ill will and conflict, is said to attain the first abode of peace. Furthermore, Kālāmas! If there is no this world and no next, and no results of good and evil deeds, then in this very life I am not blamed by others for this; rather, I am praised by the wise, and those who are diligent and hold Right View speak of me as such. Thus, Kālāmas! A noble disciple who has learned much, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from ill will and conflict, is said to attain the second abode of peace. Furthermore, Kālāmas! If one does something, one must not do evil; I do not intend evil. Why? Since I do not do evil myself, how could Suffering arise? Thus, Kālāmas! A noble disciple who has learned much, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from ill will and conflict, is said to attain the third abode of peace. Furthermore, Kālāmas! If one does something, one must not do evil. I do not fall into the world's fear or fearlessness; I always cherish compassion for all beings. My mind does not contend with living beings; it is clear and joyful. Thus, Kālāmas! A noble disciple who has learned much, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from ill will and conflict, is said to attain the fourth abode of peace. Thus, Kālāmas! A noble disciple who has learned much, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from ill will and conflict, is said to attain these four abodes of peace."

> Galamba said to the World-Honored One: "So it is, Gotama! A well-learned noble disciple, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from anger and conflict, abides in four peaceful dwellings. What are the four? There is this world and the next, and there are results of good and evil actions. I have attained this Right View and corresponding actions, observing them fully, and at the end of life, after the body breaks up, I will surely go to a good place, even up to the heavens. So it is, Gotama! A well-learned noble disciple, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from anger and conflict, is said to attain the first peaceful dwelling. Furthermore, Gotama! If there were no this world or the next, no results of good and evil actions, in this present life I would not be condemned by others for this reason, but would be praised by those of Right Wisdom, and those who are diligent and hold Right View speak of its existence. So it is, Gotama! A well-learned noble disciple, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from anger and conflict, is said to attain the second peaceful dwelling. Furthermore, Gotama! If there is anything to be done, I will surely not do evil, and I will not think of evil. Why is that? If I do no evil myself, how could Suffering arise? So it is, Gotama! A well-learned noble disciple, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from anger and conflict, is said to attain the third peaceful dwelling. Furthermore, Gotama! If there is anything to be done, I will surely not do evil. I do not harbor fears or fears of the world, but always extend loving-kindness and compassion to all beings. My mind does not contend with living beings, and is clear and joyful. So it is, Gotama! A well-learned noble disciple, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from anger and conflict, is said to attain the fourth peaceful dwelling. So it is, Gotama! A well-learned noble disciple, with a mind free from knots and resentment, free from anger and conflict, is said to attain these four peaceful dwellings. Gotama! I have understood, Sugata, I have comprehended. World-Honored One! We all take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the monastic community. May the World-Honored One accept us as lay followers, from today on, taking refuge for life, until the end of our days."

> The Buddha spoke thus. All the temple residents and monks, hearing what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and honored his teaching.
