> Middle Discourses, Great Section: Discourse on Impermanence 4<note>Third Recitation</note>

> Thus have I heard:

> Once, the Buddha was traveling in the country of Shravasti, staying at the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Park.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks: "Form is impermanent. What is impermanent is suffering. What is suffering is not the self. Feeling is also impermanent. What is impermanent is suffering. What is suffering is not the self. Perception is also impermanent. What is impermanent is suffering. What is suffering is not the self. Mental formations are also impermanent. What is impermanent is suffering. What is suffering is not the self. Consciousness is also impermanent. What is impermanent is suffering. What is suffering is not the self. Thus form is impermanent, and feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are impermanent. What is impermanent is suffering. What is suffering is not the self. "A well-learned noble disciple contemplates in this way, cultivates the seven factors of enlightenment, and has unobstructed Right Intention and Right Mindfulness. Such a one knows and sees thus: the mind is liberated from the taint of desire, liberated from the taint of becoming, liberated from the taint of ignorance. Being liberated, one knows: 'I am liberated. Birth is ended, the holy life is established, what needed to be done is done. There is no more coming to any state of being.' One knows this as it truly is. "If there are beings and the nine abodes of beings, up to the realm of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, and the remaining supreme state of existence—among all these, the foremost, the greatest, the highest, the most excellent, the most sublime is the Arahant in the world. Why is that? Because the Arahant in the world attains peace and happiness."

> Then the World-Honored One spoke this verse:

> The one without attachment knows the highest joy. Having cut off desire, free of craving, forever abandoning conceit, tearing apart the net of ignorance. Such a one attains the unmoving state, with no defilement in the mind, unstained by the world, living the holy life, free of taints. Understanding the five aggregates, dwelling in the seven good qualities, the Great Hero's path of practice— free from all fear. Accomplished in the seven treasures of awakening, fulfilling the three trainings, a true friend of excellent renown, the Buddha's foremost true child. Complete in the tenfold path, the great dragon with perfectly concentrated mind— this is the highest in the world. Such a one has no craving. Unshaken by all things, liberated from future becoming, cutting off birth, aging, sickness, and death, the task accomplished, taints extinguished. Arising in non-learners' wisdom, attaining the final body, perfect in the holy life— such a one's mind does not depend on others. Above, below, and in all directions, such a one holds no delight. Able to roar the lion's roar, the world's supreme awakening.

> Thus the Buddha spoke. Hearing what the Buddha had said, those monks rejoiced and devoted themselves to putting it into practice.
