> Middle Discourses, Junli Chapter, The Discourse on Mental Defilement: Part Five

> Thus have I heard:

> Once, the Buddha was traveling in the country of Shravasti, staying at the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika's Park.

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the monks, saying: "If monks or nuns do not uproot the five defilements of the mind and do not untie the five bonds of the mind, then it should be known that such monks and nuns are heading toward decline. What are the five defilements of the mind that are not uprooted? There may be one who harbors doubt toward the World-Honored One, feeling hesitant, unable to open the mind, unable to understand the mind, and the mind is not at peace. If there is such doubt toward the World-Honored One—hesitant, unable to open the mind, unable to understand the mind, with the mind not at peace—this is called the first defilement of the mind that is not uprooted, namely, regarding the World-Honored One. Likewise, there may be doubt toward the Dharma, the Precepts, and the teachings. If one harbors such doubt and is hesitant, unable to open the mind, unable to understand the mind, with the mind not at peace, these are called the second and third defilements of the mind that are not uprooted, namely, regarding the Dharma and the Precepts. Furthermore, there may be one who doubts the teachings, feeling hesitant, unable to open the mind, unable to understand the mind, with the mind not at peace. This is called the fourth defilement of the mind that is not uprooted, namely, regarding the teachings. Moreover, regarding those virtuous practitioners whom the World-Honored One has praised, if one criticizes, belittles, provokes, or harms them, and is unable to open the mind, unable to understand the mind, with the mind not at peace—this is called the fifth defilement of the mind that is not uprooted, namely, regarding virtuous practitioners."

> What is meant by the five bonds that prevent the mind from being freed? For instance, there may be someone who has not separated from attachment, desire, love, or thirst regarding the body. When one has not separated from attachment, desire, love, or thirst regarding the body, the mind will not incline toward, settle in, abide in, or be released from these states, nor will it make effort to cut off idle sitting. When the mind does not incline toward, settle in, abide in, or be released from these states, nor makes effort to cut off idle sitting, this is called the first bond that prevents the mind from being freed—namely, the bond of the body. Furthermore, regarding sensual desires, there may be someone who has not separated from attachment, desire, love, or thirst toward them. When one has not separated from attachment, desire, love, or thirst toward sensual desires, the mind will not incline toward, settle in, abide in, or be released from these states, nor will it make effort to cut off idle sitting. When the mind does not incline toward, settle in, abide in, or be released from these states, nor makes effort to cut off idle sitting, this is called the second bond that prevents the mind from being freed—namely, the bond of sensual desire.
