### 彭州承天院辭確禪師

> Chan Master Ci Que of Chengtian Temple in Pengzhou

開堂日。示眾云。正令提綱。猶是揑窠造偽。佛法祇對。特地漫驀上流。問著即參差。答著即差互。大眾擬向什麼處下口。然即如是。事無一向。權柄在手。縱奪臨時。有疑請問。

> At the opening of the hall, the teacher addressed the assembly, saying: "To raise the fundamental principle directly is still like fabricating a nest and creating falsehood. To respond to questions about the Dharma is merely a distraction for those of superior capacity. When asked, it becomes inconsistent; when answered, it becomes contradictory. Where, O assembly, do you intend to open your mouths? Nevertheless, although it is so, matters are not always one-sided. When the authority is in hand, one may grant or seize at will. If there are doubts, please ask."

時有僧問。如何是第一義　師云。群山穿海去。滴水下巖來。

> A monk asked, "What is the ultimate truth?" The master said, "Mountains pierce through the sea, and drops of water descend from the cliffs."

問。師唱誰家曲。宗風嗣阿誰　師云。道頭須會尾。舉目便知心。

> Question: "Master, whose tune do you sing? From whom do you inherit the school's style?" The Master said: "To follow the path, you must understand its end. Once you raise your eyes, you know the heart."

問。今日一會。何異靈山　師云。大海藏霞影。高山峯積翠微　問。如何是禪　師云。親切不離家。寂寞却歸戶　進云。如何是道　師云。拍拍是令學云。禪道相去多少　師云。天上人間。海中井底問。法王未登寶座時如何　師云。煬帝隋隄柳。四季色長青　進云。登寶座後如何　師云。嵩山不高。南嶽不廣。

> Question: "In this gathering today, how is it different from Sacred Mountain?" Master said: "The vast ocean hides the shadow of clouds; the lofty peaks accumulate emerald mist." Question: "What is Zen?" Master said: "Intimacy does not leave home; solitude returns to the household." Further asked: "What is the Way?" Master said: "Every beat follows the rhythm." The student asked: "How far apart are Zen and the Way?" Master said: "As far as heaven from earth, as the sea from the bottom of a well." Question: "What about before the Dharma King ascends the precious throne?" Master said: "Willows along the Sui embankment of Emperor Yang—their green lasts through all seasons." Further asked: "After ascending the throne?" Master said: "Mount Song is not tall; Mount Heng is not broad."

問。佛法付與王臣。郡牧在此。請師付法師云。雲澹秋空裏。雪散野田中　問。無縫塔即不問。如何是玲瓏塔　師云。荊棘林中栴檀樹。麋鹿群裏麝香兒。

> Question: The Buddha's Dharma is entrusted to kings and ministers. The prefect is here. Please, Master, impart the Dharma. The Master said: Clouds drift lightly in the autumn sky, Snow scatters across the wild fields. Question: I won't ask about the seamless tower. What is the exquisite tower? The Master said: A sandalwood tree amid the thorns, A musk deer among the herd of elk.

問。非取非離即不問。須彌大海光明普照時如何　師云。仙樂聲嘹喨。凡耳盡得聞　進云。莫便是即今事也無　師云。甎子何厚。瓦子何薄。

> Question: If we neither grasp nor let go, then there is no need to ask. When the brilliant light of Mount Sumeru and the great ocean shines everywhere, what is that like? The Master said: The celestial music resounds clearly, and every ordinary ear can hear it. The inquirer continued: Is this not exactly what is happening right now? The Master said: Why is the brick thick? Why is the tile thin?

問。大眾秖看宗師眼。未審宗師若何　師云。月華鋪地面。雲影落山頭　進云。莫便是和尚照底子也無師云。天王甲。金剛掌　問。貧子衣中寶。輪王頂上珠。如何是輪王頂上珠　師云。羅紈不是貴。布素却為珍　進云。如何是貧子衣中寶　師云。秖看脚前脚後。

> Question: "The assembly only sees the Master's eye, but what is the Master's eye?" The Master said, "Moonlight spreads across the ground, cloud shadows fall on the mountain peak." Further question: "Isn't that just the Master's way of reflecting?" The Master said, "The armor of the Heavenly King, the palm of the Vajra." Question: "The treasure in the poor man's robe, the pearl on the wheel-turning king's crown—what is the pearl on the wheel-turning king's crown?" The Master said, "Fine silk is not what's precious; plain cloth is what's truly treasured." Further question: "What is the treasure in the poor man's robe?" The Master said, "Just look before and behind your feet."

問。久扣靈龜。為什麼不知音信　師云。峻疾三峽水。高低五面山。

> Question: "Having long knocked on the sacred turtle, why does it give no sign or message?" Master replied: "Swift and fierce are the waters of the Three Gorges; high and low are the mountains on every side."

問。也知一塵含法界。大地微塵事若何　師云。迢迢三徑路。落落九嶷山。

> Question: "I know that a single mote of dust contains the entire universe. What about the countless motes of dust on the great earth?" The Master replied: "The three winding paths stretch far into the distance; the nine peaks of Mount Yi stand in solitary grandeur."

問。承教中云。聲聞人躭三昧酒。涅槃何處不通津。如何是涅槃鄉　師云。隔壁不聽聲。出門不見道。

> Question: It is said in the teachings that those who follow the Hearer's path are intoxicated by the wine of deep absorption. Where in Nirvana is there no passage through? What is this realm of Nirvana? Master said: From the next room, you cannot hear the sound; once outside the door, you cannot see the path.

問。地藏豎兩指。意旨如何　師云。拍手出門日。洗脚上船時問。建八諦三醫王。受掌中之妙藥。如何是受掌中之妙藥　師云。西瞿耶尼擊法皷。東弗于逮坐道場。

> Question: Earth Treasury (Kṣitigarbha) raised two fingers. What is the meaning of this? The Master said: "The day you clap your hands and leave the door; the moment you wash your feet and board the boat." Question: Establishing the eight truths and the three healing kings, receiving the wondrous medicine in the palm. What is receiving the wondrous medicine in the palm? The Master said: "In the western continent, the Dharma drum is struck. In the eastern continent, one sits in the place of awakening."

問。本來無一物。將何示於人　師云。將軍不解戰。秖看箭頭端　進云。恁麼即有物與人也　師云。短劒在前。長鎗在後。

> Question: "Originally, there is not a single thing. What can be shown to others?" Master said: "A general who doesn't understand battle only looks at the tip of the arrow." Questioner continued: "If so, then there is something to give to others?" Master said: "Short sword in front, long spear behind."

問。真金未出鑛時如何　師云。騎牛戴席帽　進云。出鑛後如何　師云。閙市不出頭。

問。心若無事。萬法不生苔時如何　師云。雨滴紋班點點。風吹松檜葉零零　進云。恁麼即有事去也　師云。風不來。樹不動。恰是好休時。

> Question: "If the mind is free of concerns, no phenomena arise. What about when moss appears?" The master said: "Raindrops create patterns, spots here and there. Wind blows through pine and cedar leaves, rustling." The student pressed: "In that case, there are still matters arising." The master said: "When the wind doesn't come, the trees don't move. That's precisely the perfect time to rest."

問。如何是普眼　師云。寂寂更夜長。颯颯涼風起。

問。十二分教即不問。如何是衲僧分上事　師云。牧人愛山水。釣客戀漁舟。

問。有問在心。出口不得時如何　師云。塞外將軍劒。筵中錄車籌。

問。寒窻永罷頻繁語。特地尋師願指南　師云。海上遊三島。天邊看七星。

問。龍女獻珠後。為什麼不見龍女去　師云。帝王垂拱日。宰相罷筆時。

問。代代相傳諸祖印。未審還許也無　師云。一片落長空。鳳栖不擇樹。

問。是法平等。為什麼有達．不達　師云。穿靴登峻嶺。騎牛入佛堂。

問。一切有為法。如夢幻泡影。如露亦如電。學人總不俱時如何　師云。亂雲生水上。片月落池中。

問。不在內。不在外。不在中間。未審在什麼處　師云。十字路開人過少。三家村僻虎行多。

問。學人有一隻箭。射即是。不射即是　師云。作麼生是闍梨箭學人不喝　師云。者箇是草箭子　進云。如何是和尚箭　師云。禁忌須屈指。禱祈便扣牙。

問。心隨萬境轉。阿那箇是轉萬境底心　師云。嘉州大佛古人鐫。

因郡城迎舍利。僧問云。古佛舍利自有神通。為什麼却要幡華迎引　師云。愈佛數珠破。來往袈裟穿。

問。藏教表首兩字。以八不成。是何章句　師云。棒打阿師頭。未曾論實事　進云。阿那箇是實　師云。識人者多。鑒人者少。

問。百骸俱潰散。一物鎮長靈。是什麼一物鎮長靈　師云。行泥須拄杖。跨水不須船。

問。如何是佛法大意　師云。人天會裏。大眾不聞。

問。二祖不往西天。達磨不來唐土。意旨如何師云。佩劒須歸匣。擊皷不離槌。

問。有文不覽時如何　師云。簷前雨滴滴。戶外草萋萋。

問。不入大海。不見寶珠。寶珠出現時如何　師云。日月留不住。風雨自當時　進云。學人未曉。乞師方便　師云。今日來。明日去。

問。承師有言。一句道盡。如何是一句道盡底法　師云。要知千年事。但問百歲人　進云。學人還道得也無　師云。剪截繁辭試道看　進云。閟轉三乘教。閑吟五字詩　師云。者箇是教意。自己意作麼生　進云。水到渠成　師云。大眾面前。速禮三拜。

問。方寸大家話。唯我獨不知時如何　師云。三思因孟母。一孝為曹娥　進云。大眾儼然。請師直指　師云。退退十萬里。莫嫌脚步多。

問。江山雨霧起。龍吟響。虎嘯風生事若何　師云。五彩畫不就。十指揑便成　進云。恁麼則野鶴來栖泊。鳳舞正當軒師云。一句若道得。萬句也惺惺　進云。恁麼即謝師證據　師云。證據底事又作麼生　學云。珍重師云。速禮三拜。

問。眾罪如霜露。慧日能消除時如何　師云。亭臺深夜雨。樓閣靜時鍾　進云。為什麼因緣會遇時。果報還自受　師云。管筆能書。書片舌解語。

問。如何是室內一燈　師云。四時無凋變。八節鎮長明　進云。忽遇大風起時如何　師云。若人行夜地。終是不惺惺。

問。打疊摐摐今已了。未審前程事若何　師云。白雲隱隱深山裏。淥水淒淒大渡邊。

師上堂云。諸上座。若論佛法。各各當人分上。本來具足。並不少欠。與諸上座增減一毫不得。自是不覺不知。曉夜忙忙。尋經討論。向者邊那邊馳求。覓箇會解。見他諸方老宿開口動舌。便競頭𠯗將去。問道。問自己。問佛問祖。向上向下。菩提涅槃。便將為自己。𡎺在皮袋裏。到處逞驢脣馬觜。要得問難。道我僂儸。後五日死入地獄。鐵牛耕儞舌頭有日在。莫言不向儞道。如今勸儞諸人。但自迴光返照。向自己脚根下子細推尋。看是箇什麼。識取本分道理。不用尋他舌頭露布。可惜平生。為大丈夫志氣。一刀兩段。便須徹頭去。豈不是好事。即今有什麼事。近前商量。

時有僧問。未曉真如。將何辨己師云。墮　進云。恁麼即事理分明　師云。著。

問。善法堂中師子吼。毗盧心印事如何　師云。園中果子堪宜雨。架上冬瓜最怯風。

問。如何是進道問　師云。信脚行千里。搘󰬇坐百年進云。恁麼即是和尚照燭世界　師云。是照燭底又作麼生　進云。日雨時時潤　師云。念是主事。放儞三十棒。

問。承教云。清淨行者不入涅槃。破戒比丘不墮地獄。此理如何　師云。但能勘角定。不在鬪華窠。

問。賓頭盧為什麼日赴萬家齋　師云。路隔千條水。門對萬重山　進云。為是請來。不請而來師云。隨影看頭不見面。

問。佛法大意即不問。有聲無形事若何　師云。言談常在口。起坐鎮隨身　進云。恁麼即有聲去也　師云。無聲底事又作麼生進云。和尚見處　師云。爪州所日參長官。

問。如何是祖師西來意　師云。天下沒量州。陝府出鐵牛進云。恁麼即一二三　師云。今日事作麼生　僧無對　師云。一快領過。

師早參上堂。云。

晨鷄報曉早參期 鍾皷相催眾集時眨上眉毛須看取 莫教喪却且前機

又云。諸上座不妨省力。直下便恁麼薦得。早落第二頭。珍重。
