> Master Fahai of Chuzhou, who stood firm in meditation, faced a moment when Emperor Huizong converted his temple into a Taoist shrine. Ascending the seat, he addressed the assembly: "All because we haven't fully penetrated, we speak of this and that. Because we aren't truly real, we divide this from that. This body of mine doesn't even exist—how much less worth mentioning are things outside it? Viewed with the true eye, all this is but a comedy. Now the sage ruler issues his decree, turning a monk's temple into a Taoist shrine. Adding a crown to the Buddha's head—what's wrong with that? Today I, this mountain monk, must carry my staff across my shoulder, hang high my alms bowl, and settle my body and establish my life in the seamless pagoda. Beneath the rootless tree, I'll whistle at the moon and chant in the wind. Let the cloud-riding immortals come here to chant spells over water and write talismans, to gnash teeth and practice their arts. If they achieve the Way in future years and ascend to heaven in broad daylight, that may repay the unrepayable grace and aid the effortless transformation. I only fear it's not true jade—if it is jade, it's truly marvelous. Yet even so, tell me, this mountain monk's turning-around phrase—how should it be spoken? Do you understand?" He tossed down his whisk and immediately passed away. The prefect reported this to the court, and an edict was issued restoring the temple's name to "True Body."

> There is also Chan Master Ming of Tianning Temple in Ruzhou. On the day he was to change into the robes of a lay devotee, he ascended the seat and expressed gratitude for the imperial favor. After finishing, he said: "The wooden slip, I pick it up as it comes; the sitting cloth, I put down when the time is right. Clouds scatter, water flows away; silently, heaven and earth are empty." Then, closing his eyes, he passed away.
