> Master Magu Baoche

侍馬祖行次。問如何是大涅槃。祖曰急。師曰。急個甚麼。祖曰。看水　師同南泉歸宗謁徑山。路逢一婆乃問。徑山路向甚處去。婆曰。驀直去。師曰。前頭水深過得否。婆曰。不濕脚。師又問。上岸稻得與麼好。下岸稻得與麼怯。婆曰。總被螃蟹喫却也。師曰。禾好香。婆曰。沒氣息。師又問。婆在甚處住。婆曰。祇在這裏。三人至店。婆煎茶一瓶携盞三隻至。謂曰。和尚有神通者即喫茶。三人相顧間。婆曰。看老朽自逞神通去也。於是拈盞傾茶便行。

> While accompanying Master Mazu on a walk, the teacher asked, "What is Great Nirvana?" Mazu said, "Hurry." The teacher said, "Hurry about what?" Mazu said, "Watch the water." Later, the teacher, along with Nanquan and Guizong, went to visit Jingshan. On the road they met an old woman and asked, "Which way leads to Jingshan?" The woman said, "Go straight ahead." The teacher asked, "The water up ahead is deep—can we cross it?" The woman said, "It won't wet your feet." The teacher again asked, "How come the rice on the upper bank grows so well, while the rice on the lower bank looks so weak?" The woman said, "They're all being eaten by crabs." The teacher said, "The rice smells good." The woman said, "There's no scent at all." The teacher then asked, "Where do you live, madam?" The woman said, "Right here." The three of them arrived at a tea shop. The old woman brewed a pot of tea and brought three cups. She said to them, "If any of you monks have spiritual powers, you may drink this tea." While the three men exchanged glances, the old woman said, "Watch me, old as I am, manifesting my own spiritual powers!" With that, she picked up the cups, poured the tea, and walked away.
