> Master Yinfeng of Mount Wutai

> A man named Deng came to study under both Mazu and Shitou. Eventually, he found deep resonance with Mazu's teachings. Deng asked Shitou, "How can I attain harmony with the Way?" Shitou replied, "I myself am not in harmony with the Way." Deng asked, "Then what is the ultimate answer?" Shitou said, "How long have you been clinging to this question?" One day, while Shitou was cutting grass, Deng stood beside him with his hands folded. Shitou tossed his sickle in front of Deng and cut down a single blade of grass. Deng said, "Master, you only cut that one, not the other." Shitou lifted the sickle. Deng took it and mimicked the motion of cutting grass. Shitou said, "You only cut the other, but you don't understand how to cut this one." Deng had no reply.

> Dongshan said: “Are there still any mounds or hills?”

> The master was pushing a cart. Mazu was sitting on the road with his legs stretched out. The master said, "Please, Master, pull in your legs." Mazu said, "Already stretched out, I don't pull back." The master said, "Already advancing, I don't retreat." He then pushed the cart over Mazu's foot, injuring it. Mazu returned to the Dharma Hall, picked up an axe, and said, "The one who just injured this old monk's foot, come out!" The master came out and stretched his neck in front of Mazu. Mazu put down the axe. Later, the master went to Nanquan. It happened to be the time for the community to gather for a lecture. Nanquan pointed to a clean vase and said, "This bronze vase is the object. There is water in the vase. Without moving the object, bring me the water." The master picked up the vase and poured out the water right in front of Nanquan. Nanquan then let it go. The master went to Weishan and entered the hall. He placed his robes and bowl on the upper board. When Weishan heard that the master's uncle had arrived, he first prepared himself properly, then came down to the hall to greet him. When the master saw him coming, he lay down as if to rest. Weishan then returned to his quarters. The master set out. Shortly after, Weishan asked his attendant, "Is the master's uncle still here?" The attendant said, "He has already left." Weishan said, "What did he say when he left?" The attendant said, "He said nothing." Weishan said, "Don't say he said nothing. His silence was like thunder." The master was at Xiangzhou in the Hall of Breaking Dignity. He was only wearing his undergarment. By the chopping block, he picked up the mallet and said, "If you can say something, I won't hit you." At that moment, the assembly remained silent. The master then hit them once.

> Fayan Yi said, "Deng Yinfeng was indeed strange, very strange. But he didn't quite hit the mark." He also said, "At that time, the entire assembly came about by chance." Cuiyan Zhi said, "These words have a point that can be examined. Tell me, who is it that is being examined?" Xuedou said, "Indeed, indeed."

> The master spent winters on Mount Heng and summers at Qingliang. During the Yuanhe era of the Tang Dynasty, he made a pilgrimage to Mount Wutai. His route took him through Huaixi, where Wu Yuanji had raised an army against the imperial court. Government forces and rebels were locked in battle, with no decisive outcome yet. The master said, "I must go and resolve this conflict." He cast his staff into the air and flew across the battlefield. Soldiers on both sides looked up in awe, and what they witnessed fulfilled a prophecy they had dreamed of. Their will to fight immediately dissolved. Having displayed such supernatural powers, the master worried that this might confuse or delude the masses. He therefore entered Mount Wutai and prepared to pass away before the Diamond Grotto. First, he asked the assembled monastics: "Throughout the ages, when masters have passed away, I have seen many sitting or lying down. Is there anyone who passed away standing up?" They said, "Yes." The master asked, "And has anyone passed away upside down?" They replied, "We have never seen that." With that, the master stood on his head and passed away, his robes falling neatly along his body. The assembly discussed carrying him to cremation, but his body stood perfectly still and immovable. People from near and far gathered to witness this, filled with amazement and lamentation. The master had a younger sister who was a nun and happened to be there. She patted his body and scolded him: "Elder brother, you never followed the rules in life, and now in death you still bewilder people!" She gave his body a push, and it fell over. The body was then cremated, and his relics were collected and enshrined in a stupa.
