> When Dayi first visited Shitou, Shitou asked, "What is your mind?" Dayi replied, "The one that speaks and hears is." Shitou shouted him out. After ten days, Dayi returned and asked, "Since what I said before was not it, what else is the mind?" Shitou said, "Apart from raising your eyebrows and blinking your eyes, bring me your mind." Dayi said, "There is no mind to bring." Shitou said, "So you do have a mind—why say there is none? Claiming there is no mind is slander." At these words, Dayi was greatly awakened. <note>Miaoxi said, "Tell me, what did Dayi awaken to?"</note> Another day, while standing in attendance, Shitou asked, "Are you a monk who practices Zen meditation, or a monk who idles about the district?" Dayi said, "I am a monk who practices Zen meditation." Shitou asked, "What is Zen?" Dayi said, "Raising eyebrows and blinking eyes." Shitou said, "Apart from raising eyebrows and blinking eyes, show me your original face." Dayi said, "Please, Master, look beyond raising eyebrows and blinking eyes." Shitou said, "I have already set that aside." Dayi said, "I have already shown it." Shitou said, "Since you have shown it, what about my mind?" Dayi said, "It is no different from yours, Master." Shitou said, "That has nothing to do with you." Dayi said, "Originally there is nothing." Shitou said, "You also have nothing." Dayi said, "Since there is nothing, that is the true thing." Shitou said, "The true thing cannot be grasped. Your mind's seeing and measuring works this way—you must protect it well." Later, when Dayi became a teacher, he addressed the assembly: "Those who study the Path must recognize their own original mind and show it to themselves—only then can they see the Path. Many people these days only recognize raising eyebrows and blinking eyes, a word or a silence, and hastily approve it as the essential mind. This is truly not understanding. I will now explain it clearly for you all—each of you must listen and receive it. Just set aside all deluded mental activity, thoughts, and perceptions—that is your true mind. This mind has nothing to do with sense objects, nor with clinging to stillness or silence. This very mind is Buddha—it needs no cultivation or refinement. Why? Because it responds to conditions and illuminates freely, functioning on its own. If you search for where its functioning comes from, you cannot find it. This is called wondrous functioning—it is the original mind. You must protect it well; do not take it lightly." A monk asked, "When people who are within meet each other, what happens?" Dayi said, "They are already not within." The monk asked, "What about those who are within?" Dayi said, "Don't ask such a question." One day, Han Wen Gong came to visit and asked Dayi, "How old are you, Master?" Dayi held up his prayer beads and asked, "Do you understand?" Han said, "No." Dayi said, "Day and night, one hundred and eight." Han did not understand and left. The next day he returned. At the gate, he saw the head monk and brought up the previous exchange, asking what it meant. The head monk clicked his teeth three times. When Han met Dayi and asked again, Dayi also clicked his teeth three times. Han said, "So the Dharma is not twofold after all." Dayi asked, "What is the reasoning?" Han said, "Just now I asked the head monk, and he did the same." Dayi then called the head monk and asked, "Is it true you answered him that way?" The head monk said yes. Dayi then struck him and expelled him from the monastery.

汾陽昭頌云。解展機鋒是大顛。明知不是小因緣。一般扣齒叢林異。出院韓公始得閒。

> Fenyang Zhaosong said: "To unfold the sharp edge of the mind is the great leap. Clearly knowing it is no small matter. The common practice of gnashing teeth differs among the forests. Only when Han Gong left the monastery did he find true leisure."

> One day, Governor Wen said to the Master, "Your disciple is busy with military and administrative affairs. Please give me one phrase of the essential Dharma." The Master remained silent for a long time. The Governor was at a loss. At that time, Sanping was serving as attendant. He struck the meditation bench three times. The Master said, "What are you doing?" Sanping said, "First use Concentration to settle, then use Wisdom to liberate." The Governor then said, "The Master's style is lofty and steep. Your disciple has found an entry point through the attendant." A monk asked, "The sea of Suffering is deep and vast—what should be used as the boat and raft?" The Master said, "Use wood as the boat and raft." The monk said, "In that case, one can cross over." The Master said, "The blind remain blind, the mute remain mute." One day, as the Master walked along the corridor with a back-scratcher, he met a monk who bowed in greeting. The Master suddenly struck him on the mouth with the back-scratcher and said, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "I do not understand." The Master said, "Old wild fox Dadian has never let anyone down."
