### ▲仙天禪師

> Master Xiantian

僧參。纔展坐具。師曰。不用通時暄。還我文彩未生時道理來。曰某甲有口瘂却。即閑苦死。覓個臘月扇子作麼。師拈棒作打勢。僧把住曰。還我未拈棒時道理。師曰。隨我者隨之南北。不隨我者死住東西。曰隨與不隨且置。請師指出東西南北。師便打披雲和尚來。纔入方丈。師便問。未見東越老人時。作麼生為物。雲曰。祇見雲生碧嶂。焉知月落寒潭。師曰。祇與麼也難得。曰莫是未見時麼。師便喝。雲展兩手。師曰。錯怪人者有甚麼限。雲掩耳而出。師曰。死却這漢平生也。

> A monk came to pay respects. As he began to spread his sitting mat, the master said, "No need for formal greetings. Return to me the principle before any pattern appeared." The monk said, "I have a mouth but it's mute—what use is searching for a fan in the twelfth month?" The master picked up his staff and made a striking motion. The monk grabbed it and said, "Return to me the principle before you lifted the staff." The master said, "Those who follow me go south and north; those who do not follow me remain fixed in the east and west." The monk asked, "Putting aside following or not, please, Master, point out east, west, south, and north." The master struck him. When Master Piyun arrived and just entered the abbot's quarters, the master immediately asked, "Before you saw the old man of East Yue, how did you guide beings?" Piyun said, "I only see clouds rising over the blue peaks—how could I know the moon has set in the cold pond?" The master said, "Even that is not easy to attain." Piyun asked, "Is this perhaps the state before seeing?" The master shouted. Piyun spread both hands. The master said, "There's no end to those who wrongly blame others." Piyun covered his ears and left. The master said, "This fellow's whole life is dead now."
