### ▲洪州新興嚴陽尊者

> Master Yanyang of Hongzhou Xinxing

初參趙州問。一物不將來時如何。州曰。放下著。師曰。既是一物不將來。放下個甚麼。州曰。放不下擔取去。師於言下大悟。後常有一蛇一虎隨。從手中與食。

> First visiting Zhaozhou, he asked, "When nothing is brought along, what then?" Zhaozhou said, "Put it down." The master said, "Since nothing is brought along, what is there to put down?" Zhaozhou said, "If you can't put it down, carry it away." At these words, the master was greatly enlightened. Afterward, a snake and a tiger often followed him, and he would feed them from his hands.

黃龍南頌。一物不將來。兩肩挑不起。言下忽知非。心中無限喜。毒惡既忘懷。蛇虎為知己。光陰幾百年。清風猶未已。

> Huanglong Nan's verse: Not a single thing brought along, Yet both shoulders cannot bear it. The moment words fall, suddenly knowing what is wrong, The heart overflows with boundless joy. Having let go of malice and evil, Snakes and tigers become kindred spirits. Hundreds of years have passed since, Yet the pure breeze still lingers on.

僧問。如何是佛。師曰土塊。曰如何是法。師曰。地動也。曰如何是僧。師曰。喫粥喫飯。問如何是新興水。師曰。面前江裏。

> A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The master said, "A lump of earth." The monk asked, "What is the Dharma?" The master said, "The earth moves." The monk asked, "What is the Sangha?" The master said, "Eating porridge, eating rice." The monk asked, "What is the water of Xinxing?" The master said, "In the river right before you."

徑山杲曰。似這般法門。恰似兒戲相似。入得這般法門。方安樂得人。如真淨和尚。拈提古今。不在雪竇之下。而末流傳習。却成惡口。小家只管問古人作麼生。真如又如何下語。楊岐又如何下語。你管得許多閒事。瘥病不假驢䭾藥。若是對病與藥。籬根拾得一莖草。便可療病。說甚麼朱砂附子人參自术。

> Master Jing Shan Gao said, "This kind of teaching is like a child's game. Only by entering such a teaching can one find true peace and joy. For instance, Master Zhen Jing, in his comments on ancient and modern cases, was no less than Xue Dou. Yet, in later transmissions, it turned into harsh criticism. Narrow-minded people only ask what the ancients did, how Zhen Ru responded, and how Yang Qi replied. Why bother with so many trivial matters? Curing illness doesn't require carrying medicine on a donkey. If you prescribe the right remedy for the ailment, even a blade of grass picked from the roadside can heal. Why talk about cinnabar, aconite, ginseng, or atractylodes?"
