> ▲Chan Master Zhongxing of Jianyuan, Tanzhou

> While he was serving as the attendant to Daowu, he once offered tea to him. Daowu lifted the cup and said, "Is this wrong or right?" The master crossed his hands in front of him and looked at Daowu. Daowu said, "If wrong, then wrong in every way; if right, then right in every way." The master said, "I don't say it like that." Daowu said, "How do you say it?" The master snatched the cup, held it up, and said, "Is this wrong or right?" Daowu said, "You are not serving as my attendant in vain." The master then bowed. One day, while accompanying Daowu to visit a lay patron's home to offer condolences, the master touched the coffin and asked, "Alive or dead?" Daowu said, "I don't say alive; I don't say dead." The master asked, "Why don't you say?" Daowu replied, "I don't say, I don't say." On the way back, midway, the master said, "Teacher, today you must tell me. If you don't, I'll hit you." Daowu said, "You may hit me if you like, but I still won't say." The master then hit him. When Daowu returned to the monastery, he said, "You had better leave here. I fear the administrators might find out, which would not be good." The master then bowed and took his leave, hiding in a village temple. Three years later, he suddenly heard a young boy reciting the Guanyin Sutra. When it came to the line, "Those who should be saved by the body of a monk are shown the body of a monk," he suddenly had a great awakening. He then burned incense, bowed from afar, and said, "I now truly believe that my late teacher's parting words were never spoken in vain. It was I who did not understand, and yet I blamed my late teacher. Since my late teacher has passed away, only Shishuang is his true heir. He will surely certify my understanding." So he went to Shishuang. When Shishuang saw him, he immediately asked, "After leaving Daowu, where have you been?" The master said, "I've just been staying in a village temple." Shishuang said, "Have you understood the incident of hitting your late teacher before?" The master stood up, stepped forward, and said, "Please, teacher, say a turning phrase." Shishuang said, "Didn't I say? I don't say alive; I don't say dead." The master then related how he had come to understanding in the village temple. He then bowed to Shishuang, arranged a meal, and repented. Another day, carrying a shovel, he went again to Shishuang. In the Dharma hall, he walked from east to west, from west to east. Shishuang said, "What are you doing?" The master said, "I'm looking for my late teacher's sacred remains." Shishuang said, "Vast waves stretch boundless, white foam floods the sky—what late teacher's sacred remains are you looking for?" The master said, "This is the perfect time to apply effort." Shishuang said, "Here, not even a needle can penetrate—what effort can you apply?" The master placed the shovel on his shoulder and left.

> Taiyuan Fu said, "The former master's sacred relics are still here." Xuedou praised: Rabbits and horses have horns. Cows and sheep have no horns. Not a hair, not a trace. Like a mountain, like a peak. The golden sacred relics are still here today. White waves surge to the sky—where can they settle? Nowhere to settle. The single shoe returning west was once lost. Yuanwu Qin said: Some misunderstand and say, "Not speaking—that itself is the Way." No words are words. "Rabbits and horses have no horns," yet he says they have horns. "Cows and sheep have horns," yet he says they have no horns. This makes no sense at all. They fail to realize that the ancients, with a thousand transformations and ten thousand changes, displayed such supernatural powers solely to smash open your den of clever ghosts. If you can see through it, you won't need a single word of explanation. "Rabbits and horses have horns. Cows and sheep have no horns. Not a hair, not a trace. Like a mountain, like a peak." These four lines are like a single wish-fulfilling jewel. Xuedou has dumped it whole right in front of you. Afterwards, it's just a matter of recording the verdict according to the case.

> One day, Master Baogai came to visit. The Master rolled up the blinds and sat inside his quarters. As soon as Baogai saw this, he lowered the blinds and returned to the guest quarters. The Master sent an attendant to relay a message: "Elder, you've come a long way—that couldn't have been easy. Still, there's a river between us." Baogai grabbed the attendant and gave him a slap. The attendant said, "No need to hit me—the head monk is here." Baogai said, "It's precisely because that old fellow, the head monk, is here that I'm hitting you." The attendant went back and reported this to the Master. The Master said, "Still, there's a river between us."
